NOVEMBER 12, 2011 FOOTBALL: Arizona State at Washington State |
I braved the snowy pass conditions and made my way over to Pullman for the Cougs "Dad's Weekend" matchup with the Arizona State Sun Devils...and wouldn't you know it, it started snowing a couple of hours before the game. Cougar fans know that means one thing...the Cougs always win when it snows! This game was a blast to shoot, especially in the second half during the "blizzard"! It snowed a little during the first half and completely stopped before halftime, but after uploading photos in Bohler at the break, my daughter and I came out for the second half to a full-fledged snow storm. It's not fun to have to wrap all of the camera gear for bad weather, but shooting in the snow is way more fun than shooting in the rain. Not only was it fun to shoot in the snow, but Washington State had some fun on the field as well! The Cougars stagged a late comeback to defeat the Sun Devils, 37-27. We definitely got some great shots of the emotion of the game, including ASU's head man, Dennis Erickson, showing his frustration as the Sun Devils fell behind for good as time ticked away in the fourth quarter. With the win, Washington State kept their bowl hopes alive by climbing to 4-6 overall and 2-5 in the Pac-12 Conference with two more conference games to go....win both, and they go bowling. It's a tough task, but next Saturday's tilt with Utah is at home, and the Apple Cup finale is at Century Link Field instead of Husky Stadium..."so you're telling me there's a chance!" NOVEMBER 3, 2011 SOCCER: Washington State at Washington |
I ventured out to the Husky Soccer Field at the University of Washington on November 3rd, for the night clash between the Cougars and the Huskies in the last regular season match of the Pac-12 conference season. It was an incredibly cold night for soccer (I certainly would not have wanted to get kicked in the shins with the temperatures in the 30's), but both teams played hard in the Apple Cup of soccer showdown. Soccer is somewhat tough to shoot, with the ball constantly moving and changing direction, and shooting at night under the "lights" adds to the challenge. I ended up not renting a 400mm 2.8 lense for this one, and probably should have, but still got some great shots by positioning myself behind and to the left or right of the respective goals and shooting with my 70-200mm 2.8 when the action got close. As for the match, both teams were fired up and played well, as the Huskies were playing for their seniors on "Senior Night" and the Cougs were playing for a berth in the upcoming NCAA tournament...and it was a typical, hard-fought rivalry battle that went to double overtime, with the match ending in a 0-0 tie. With the tie, Washington State (12-6-3, 6-3-2 Pac-12) clinched at least a tie for fourth place in the final conference standings, which should earn them a berth in the NCAA tournament. WSU also extended their unbeaten streak against the Huskies (7-8-5, 3-5-3 Pac-12) to eight seasons. The last time they lost to UW was in 2003. Washington State set up shop at Century Link Field in Seattle for their Pac-12 battle with Oregon State on October 22nd, and got to pack my gear for the much shorter drive to Seattle (30 miles) instead of Pullman (300 miles)...although, if I had my preference, I'd much rather battle the traffic in Pullman instead of Seattle any day. On the plus side, the food in the press box is a little better at Century Link than it is in Pullman, but I'm looking for that to change next year when the new press box, complete with high end suites, loge boxes indoor/outdoor luxury seats, is unveiled! Although I got some great shots, including some nice sequence shots of touchdown catches (one of which is shown above, with the main shot being just as the ball is landing in to the receivers outstretched hands), this was a tough game to witness, as Oregon State pretty much had their way with the Cougar defense all night, winning in fairly easy fashion, 44-21. On a side note, I did like the new gray uniform combination today a lot better than the gray combo they wore for homecoming against Stanford! The Cougs really needed this one to fuel their bowl hopes this season, but with the loss, they fell to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the Pac-12 Conference.
