Paced by a balanced scoring attack, led by Andrew W., with 14 points, and David G., with 12 points, the Mt. Rainier Lutheran boy's basketball team started a new winning streak by defeating Highland Christian Prep, 51-41, in the consolation game of the Mt. Vernon Christian Christmas tournament. Numerous other players contributed to the scoring total, including Tyler S., with 6 points, Ryan H., with 5 points, Marshall P. and Dan P., with 4 points each, and Zach L., Carsten N. and Brendan M., all with 2 points each. After racing to an 11-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, Mt. Rainier Lutheran went ice cold from the field in the second and third quarters, allowing Highland Christian Prep to climb back in the game, and ultimately lost in the consolation game of the Mt. Vernon Christian Christmas tournament, 33-28. The Hawks were led by Alexis F., with 10 points, Taylor T., with 8 points, and Ashley C., with 5 points. Mt. Rainier Lutheran High School had their four game winning streak snapped in the first round of the Mt. Vernon Christian Christmas tournament by the host school, as the Hurricanes used accurate three point shooting in the first quarter to race to an early lead and hold on to defeat the Hawks, 48-38. The Hawks were led on the offensive end by Andrew W., with 13 points, David G., with 11 points, and Ryan H., with 10 points. Vernon Christian Hurricanes, and were poised for a run for a victory for three quarters, but a late surge by the Hurricanes in the fourth quarter sealed the Hawks fate in a 51-28 loss. The Lady Hawks were led in scoring in the game by Kalene C. and Taylor T., both with 8 points each. MRLH looks to start another winning streak as they take on Highland Christian Prep in the consolation game of the tournament tomorrow. After traveling to Adna last Friday, the Lady Hawks hosted the Pirates at Meyer Gymnasium less than a week later for a home-and-home rematch, and the results were just about the same as MRLH fell to Adna 53-22. Leading the way for Mt. Rainier Lutheran were Kalene C., with 8 points, and Taylor T., with 7 points. Mt. Rainier Lutheran doesn't have much time to analyze film from tonight's game, as they head to Elma (kind of...actually Elma is probably the closest town) tomorrow night to take on Mary M. Knight. Coming off their second place finish in the Portland Lutheran tournament over the past weekend, the Hawks continued their inspired play with a convincing victory over Christian Faith at Meier Gymnasium, 56-20. The Mt. Rainier Lutheran High School boy's basketball team lost their first game of the year, falling in the championship game of the Portland Lutheran tournament to Seattle Lutheran, 65-55. Andrew W. led all scorers with 22 points (14 in the fourth quarter), while David G. and Ryan H. chipped in 16 points and 14 points respectively. David G. was named to the All-Tournament Team. With the loss, the Hawks fall to 2-1 overall at this early juncture of the season. The Mt. Rainier Lutheran and Seattle Lutheran girl's basketball teams played a nail-biting basketball game in the championship game of the Portland Lutheran tournament, with Seattle Lutheran finally coming out on top, 35-34. In a game that was close the entire way, Seattle Lutheran made two free throws with 20 seconds left to pull out the win. Kalene C. led the way for the Hawks with 15 points, and was named to the All-Tournament Team. MRLH falls to 1-2 overall for the season. Hey all you basketball fans....winter sports (boy's and girl's basketball) are here! Mt. Rainier Lutheran High School has boy's and girl's basketball games starting this Wednesday, December 2nd, at Meier Gymnasium on the MRLH campus! Come out to support the boy's junior varsity (4:30pm tip-off) and varsity (7:30pm tip-ff) and the girl's varsity (6pm tip-off) , as they take on Northwest. This coming Friday, December 4th, both the boy's and girl's varsity squads will head to Portland to compete in the Portland Lutheran tournament through Saturday. The girl's first game is with Willamatte Christian at 2:45pm on Friday and the boy's play at 4:30pm on Friday. All games are scheduled to be played at Portland Lutheran. Please see the school calendar at the MRLH web site (http://www.mrlh.org) for driving directions. Best of luck to all the coaches and players as they begin their seasons! Both squads made the post-season last year (girl's team made the Tri-District pigtail qualifying game and the boy's team made it to the first round of Tri-District's), so everyone is excited to see them both make it even further this season!
