Even though they still have one league contest to go, when the final horn sounded at the end of their 47-36 league match-up victory at Northwest Yeshiva tonight, the Mt. Rainier Lutheran High School boy's basketball team had already clinched their first league title in school history! Congratulations to all of the coaches and players on such an historic accomplishment...and just think, the season is not even over yet, so this could be just the beginning of milestones for this team! Against Northwest Yeshiva, the Hawks were led by Andrew W., with 14 points, David G., with 11 points, Ryan H. and Zach L, both with 7 points each, Carsten N., with 5 points, and Garett C., with 3 points. With the victory, the Hawks move to 14-3 on the season and 5-0 in league play. For all the details, head to the usual suspects, the Seattle Times and the News Tribune. CoachesAid.com also had an excellent article on MRLH that was published yesterday that talked about what a victory over Northwest Yeshiva would mean for the Hawk program. The Hawks travel to Auburn Adventist Academy on Tuesday and look to avenge one of their three losses of this season. NOTE TO MRLH ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, LUKE SYVERSON: Time to go buy another league championship plaque to hang on the wall in Meier Gymnasium! NOTE: MaxPreps.com also does a breakdown of each of the state's classifications teams' winning percentages as the season goes on. In the state 1B boy's breakdown, MRLH boasts the state's third best winning percentage at .846 (based on the Hawks 11-2 record), behind only Rosalia's 1.000 (15-0) and Wellpinit's .857 (12-2). RANKINGS UPDATE: Mason Kelley, who covers high school sports for the Seattle Times, posted the first AP statewide sports writers boy's and girl's basketball polls of the season today on his blog. The 1B boy's rankings only included the top 5 teams, but it also listed the eight other teams receiving votes in the poll....and guess who was tied for 11th with 7 votes....Mt. Rainier Lutheran High School! Check out all of the classification AP sports writers rankings HERE. Meanwhile, at MaxPreps.com, an online division of CBS Sports, they have moved the boy's team from #25 in the state last week up to #24 this week in the statewide 1B classification (although I'm not sure how they calculate their rankings...it's a bit confusing, as several teams with losing records are ranked ahead of the Hawks). We'll keep tabs on each of the rankings sites and update you each week on where Mt. Rainier Lutheran High School stands as the season progresses. GO HAWKS! - MRLH Sports Photo Blog staff |
