BOY'S BASKETBALL: MT. RAINIER LUTHERAN BOY'S ARE LEAGUE CHAMPIONS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SCHOOL HISTORY!!

Even though they still have one league contest to go, when the final horn sounded at the end of their 47-36 league match-up victory at Northwest Yeshiva tonight, the Mt. Rainier Lutheran High School boy's basketball team had already clinched their first league title in school history! Congratulations to all of the coaches and players on such an historic accomplishment...and just think, the season is not even over yet, so this could be just the beginning of milestones for this team!

Against Northwest Yeshiva, the Hawks were led by Andrew W., with 14 points, David G., with 11 points, Ryan H. and Zach L, both with 7 points each, Carsten N., with 5 points, and Garett C., with 3 points. With the victory, the Hawks move to 14-3 on the season and 5-0 in league play.

For all the details, head to the usual suspects, the Seattle Times and the News Tribune. CoachesAid.com also had an excellent article on MRLH that was published yesterday that talked about what a victory over Northwest Yeshiva would mean for the Hawk program.

The Hawks travel to Auburn Adventist Academy on Tuesday and look to avenge one of their three losses of this season.

NOTE TO MRLH ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, LUKE SYVERSON: Time to go buy another league championship plaque to hang on the wall in Meier Gymnasium!

On the offensive side, Mt. Rainier Lutheran was led by Andrew W., with 15 points, Ryan H., with 9 points, and Zach L. and David G., with 5 points each. For more details on the contest, click on the link for the Seattle Times and/or for the News Tribune.

BOY'S BASKETBALL: MONDAY MORNING RANKINGS UPDATE...HAWKS MOVE UP IN TWO POLLS (UPDATED AP POLL STILL NOT OUT)

RANKINGS UPDATE: It's Monday morning, so it must be time for a boy's state 1B ranking update! Here are two of the three sites that provide rankings (the state AP sports writers poll is not out yet...once it is published for this week, the results will be posted)...

CoachesAid.com: The Mt. Rainier Lutheran Hawks moved up one spot, from #8 to #7 this week. To view all of the different classification rankings (including the state 1B boy's rankings), click HERE. Here is a breakdown of the top 10 in this week's state 1B poll according to CoachesAid.com.

1. Rosalia (15-0)
2. Wellpinit (12-2)
3. Cusick (12-3)
4. Pateros (9-3)
5. Sunnyside Christian School (7-3)
6. Lummi Nation School (10-2)
7. Mt. Rainier Lutheran (11-2)
8. Neah Bay (8-2)
9. Wilbur-Creston (10-4)
10. Lopez Senior (8-4)

MaxPreps.com: Mt. Rainier Lutheran moved up one spot, from #24 to #23, this week. To see this week's top 25 state 1B boy's rankings, click HERE (and because MaxPreps.com ranks 25 teams each week, I'm not going to put the entire list on the blog....and I'm still not sure how they come up with their rankings, as several teams with losing records are ranked ahead of the Hawks, but if I figure it out, I'll let everyone know the details).

NOTE: MaxPreps.com also does a breakdown of each of the state's classifications teams' winning percentages as the season goes on. In the state 1B boy's breakdown, MRLH boasts the state's third best winning percentage at .846 (based on the Hawks 11-2 record), behind only Rosalia's 1.000 (15-0) and Wellpinit's .857 (12-2). To see this week's breakdown, click HERE. MaxPreps.com shows all of the state's teams in each classification, and where they sit in relation to all of the other teams. The current 1B list has 57 teams, with MRLH sitting in the #3 spot! Great job Hawks!

BOY'S BASKETBALL: STATE AP SPORTS WRITERS HAVE MT. RAINIER LUTHERAN BOY'S IN THEIR SIGHTS AND MAXPREPS MOVES HAWKS UP A NOTCH IN THEIR RANKINGS

RANKINGS UPDATE: Mason Kelley, who covers high school sports for the Seattle Times, posted the first AP statewide sports writers boy's and girl's basketball polls of the season today on his blog. The 1B boy's rankings only included the top 5 teams, but it also listed the eight other teams receiving votes in the poll....and guess who was tied for 11th with 7 votes....Mt. Rainier Lutheran High School!

Check out all of the classification AP sports writers rankings HERE.

Meanwhile, at MaxPreps.com, an online division of CBS Sports, they have moved the boy's team from #25 in the state last week up to #24 this week in the statewide 1B classification (although I'm not sure how they calculate their rankings...it's a bit confusing, as several teams with losing records are ranked ahead of the Hawks).

We'll keep tabs on each of the rankings sites and update you each week on where Mt. Rainier Lutheran High School stands as the season progresses.

GIRL'S BASKETBALL: REMATCH WITH NORTHWEST YESHIVA TURNS IN TO A NAILBITER, BUT MRLH FALLS IN CLOSE BATTLE, 43-37

The last time Mt. Rainier Lutheran met Northwest Yeshiva up in Seattle, they were missing a couple of key players and got off to a very slow start, trailing 26-5 at halftime. Tonight was a much different story, as the Hawks still trailed at halftime, but this time the score was 21-20. The game was nip-and-tuck the entire way, with Northwest Yeshiva pulling away in the final minute to win, 43-37. MRLH was led by Kalene C., with 14 points, and Alexis F., with 9 points.
