FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2010 BLOG NEWS & NOTES HAWK'S PLAYOFF BASKETBALL: HOOP TEAMS COME "OH SO CLOSE", HISTORIC SEASONS COME TO AN END |
The Mt. Rainier Lutheran girl's basketball team held the lead at halftime and the Hawk boy's basketball team sent their game in to overtime with an amazing three-pointer by Ryan H., but both teams ultimately came up on the short end of the scoreboard in hard-fought, close games to determine who would go to the state tournament. Both teams had the best seasons' either one have ever had, and with most of the key players coming back on both the boy's and girl's teams, the future looks incredibly bright for the MRLH hoops! TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2010 BLOG NEWS & NOTES HAWK'S PLAYOFF BASKETBALL: NO STATE BERTHS YET, GAMES FOR "ALL THE MARBLES" THIS FRIDAY |
Both of the Mt. Rainier Lutheran basketball teams suffered losses tonight, setting up games this coming Friday at Mountlake Terrace High School for automatic State tournament berths. If the boy's and girl's teams win Friday, they are off to the State tournament (after games on Saturday to determine 3rd and 4th place in the Tri-District tournament, and seeding placement for State), and if they lose on Friday, their season(s) are completed. GIRL'S TRI-DISTRICT TOURNAMENT / SEMIFINALS: The MRLH girl's basketball team ran in to a defensive buzz saw against Neah Bay (18-0, ranked #5 in the State by CoachesAid.com) in the semifinals of the 1B Tri-District tournament. Neah Bay pressed the Lady Hawks the entire game and Mt. Rainier Lutheran ended up on the short end of the scoreboard, 49-19. With the win, Neah Bay qualifies for the State tournament and will meet North Sound Christian, who defeated Northwest Yeshiva in the other semifinal, 48-35, in the 1B Tri-District finals on Saturday. MRLH moves to a Friday night contest against Lummi Nation, with the winner of that game automatically qualifying for State (for those of you who love to "scout" upcoming opponents, Lummi Nation lost to Northwest Yeshiva in the opening round, 52-43). Against Neah Bay, the Lady Hawks were led by juniors Kalene C., Alexis F. and Emilee L., who each tallied 5 points, senior Ashley C. and sophomore BreAnna R., both with 2 points apiece, and freshman Kayla F. and junior Taylor T., with one point each. Best of luck to Coach Syverson the Lady Hawks on Friday night! GO HAWKS! BOY'S TRI-DISTRICT TOURNAMENT / SEMIFINALS: The Mt. Rainier Lutheran boy's hoop team was within three points at the end of the third quarter against Lummi Nation, a team that has been in the post season too many times to count (and are currently ranked just ahead of the Hawks in the latest CoachesAid.com poll, and came in to the contest sporting an 18-2 record). Unfortunately for the Hawks, the post season experience paid off for Lummi, as they were able to extend their lead in the final quarter and ultimately win the game, 58-46. In fact, the semifinals of the 1B Tri-District tournament had the State's sixth, seventh, eighth and tenth ranked teams squaring off against each other, with Lummi Nation (18-2, ranked 6th) defeating MRLH (18-3, ranked 7th) and Neah Bay (16-4, ranked 8th) defeating Lopez Island (15-5, ranked 10th), in another exciting game.. With the win, Lummi heads to the finals of the Tri-District tournament (and to State) on Saturday against Neah Bay (also off to State), while the Hawks move to a Friday night contest against Tulalip Heritage, with the winner automatically qualifying for a trip to the Yakima SunDome and a seat at the State tournament table! Against the Lummi Nation, MRLH was led by junior Andrew W., who poured in 29 points, and senior Ryan H., who chipped in 9 points. Also contributing on the offensive end of the court were Ryan B., David G., Zach L., and Carsten N., who all tallied 2 points apiece. Best of luck to Coach Rasmus and his troops this Friday night! The Mountlake Terrace High School gymnasium was rocking on Friday night with a large contingent of Mt. Rainier Lutheran fans, who came to watch the Hawk boy's and girl's teams begin their quest for State tournament berths in the 2010 1B Boy's and Girl's Tri-District basketball tournaments. Round one went the Hawk's way, as both teams came away with victories and moved in to the semifinals of the double elimination stress-fest! GIRL'S TRI-DISTRICT TOURNAMENT / FIRST ROUND: Tri-District's began for MRLH with the girl's team taking on arch-rival Grace Academy, the #2 seed out of the Northwest League. Grace had defeated the Hawks in their only head-to-head match-up this season back on January 9th, in Marysville, 37-31. This time, however, just like the MRLH girl's volleyball team back in November, the Lady Hawks took out Grace Academy in a tightly contested battle of nerves in the first round at Tri-District's, 31-28! In the dramatic opening round victory, their 10th victory of this season and first playoff victory ever, the Lady Hawks were led by junior Alexis F., with 10 points, junior Emilee L. and freshman Kayla F., both with 6 points each, senior Ashley C., with 5 points, and junior Taylor T., with 4 points. For more game details, click on the link for the News Tribune. With the win, coach Sarah Syverson and her Lady Hawk squad move in to a semi-final match-up with Neah Bay on Tuesday at 5:00pm at Mountlake Terrace High School. Neah Bay defeated Highland Christian Prep, 71-30, in the first round. MRLH needs one more victory in the Tri-District tournament to garner the first girl's State tournament berth in school history. BOY'S TRI-DISTRICT TOURNAMENT / FIRST ROUND: The 7th ranked (CoachesAid.com final regular season poll) Mt. Rainier Lutheran boy's hoop team began their pursuit on joining the State's best 1B basketball teams in the Yakima SunDome in two weeks at the State tournament by throttling North Sound Christian, 49-34, in the first round of the boy's Tri-District tournament at Mountlake Terrace High School. The Hawks were led by junior Andrew W., with 25 points (21 of which he tallied in the first half alone), sophomore Carsten N., with 7 points, sophomore David G., with 5 points, senior's Ryan H. and Zach L., both with 4 points, and junior Ryan B., with 2 points. For additional details on the MRLH first ever playoff victory, check out the great game article on CoachesAid.com and you can also get teh complete box score at the News Tribune. In the semi-finals this coming Tuesday night, the Hawks will take on Lummi Nation, who defeated the Muckleshoot Tribal School in the first round with a strong fourth quarter finish in what had been a very close game, 72-55. With one more victory at the Tri-District tourney, coach Ron Rasmus, and his 18-3 Hawk squad, would qualify for the State tournament for the first time in school history. Congrats to both teams for starting out this year's "second season" on winning notes....keep up the great work and we're ready to follow both teams to the Yakima SunDome for the State tournament! Led by junior Kalene C., with a school record 36 points, and junior Taylor T., with 15 points, the Mt. Rainier Lutheran Lady Hawk basketball team ended their regular season in impressive fashion by trouncing the Muckleshoot Tribal School with a school record offensive performance at Meier Gymnasium on "Senior Night", 88-18. Other Lady Hawks making significant contributions on the offensive end were freshman Kayla F. and junior Alexis F., with 13 points apiece, and Emilee L., with 9 points. Prior to the game, Mt. Rainier Lutheran High School recognized senior guards, Ashley C. and Natalie K., for all of their contributions to the program over their high school careers, with their leadership helping guide the program from one that didn't win a game their freshman year to a team that won a school record 9 games this season. For more details on the offensive explosion, check out the Seattle Times and the News Tribune. With the win, the Lady Hawks have now won three out of their last five games, and finish the regular season at 9-11 (with most of their losses coming against higher division teams). Having lost to Auburn Adventist Academy once already this season, the Mt. Rainier Lutheran Lady Hawks were hoping for some revenge and kept the game close to halftime, but cold shooting in the 3rd quarter by MRLH allowed the home team to pull away and secure a 56-28 victory over the Lady Hawks. Alexis F. led the Hawks with 9 points, followed closely by Kalene C., with 7 points, and Emilee L., with 5 points. For more details on the contest, head to the Seattle Times and to the News Tribune. With the loss, MRLH falls to 8-11 on the season, with one more regular season game to go this Friday against the Muckleshoot Tribal School at Meier Gymnasium. In the newly updated State 1B boy's basketball rankings provided by CoachesAid.com, the Mt. Rainier Lutheran Hawks have moved back up to #7 in the state! Click on the link to see the top 10 rankings for each boy's classification in the State of Washington. Additionally, CoachesAid.com published two online articles about the amazing turnaround in boy's basketball program since head coach Ron Rasmus has come on board. You can read each article HERE (Mt. Rainier Lutheran nears historic win, published 1-27-2010) and HERE (Mt. Rainier Lutheran completes major turnaround, published 1-29-2010). As it states in the articles, prior to taking over the reigns of the boy's basketball team last season, the Hawks had been a combined 2-37 the previous two seasons, which were their first two seasons of existence in competing in varsity athletics. To be sitting at 14-3 just a season and a half later is simply amazing! Kudo's to all of the coaches and athletes for all of their hard work and dedication, and best of luck the rest of the way this season! As we have been doing for the last several weeks, we will provide updated links to the rankings every Monday from here on out for the rest of the basketball season...so check back each week (the CoachesAid.com rankings usually come out on Monday night each week, so check back on Monday nights or Tuesday mornings for state ranking updates)!
