| Washington State came back from a 2-0 deficit to score two runs in the top of the eighth and another in the top of the ninth to take game one in the Cougars Pac-10 conference showdown with 17th ranked Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, 3-2. WSU ace, Chad Arnold kept the Cougs in the game with seven strong innings until the bats came alive just enough to push Washington State past the Ducks. The come-from-behind victory was the 13th of the season. With the win, WSU moves to 6-7 in the Pac-10 and 22-15 overall, while Oregon fell to 8-8 in Pac-10 play and 28-14 overall. | Head coach Donnie Marbut and the Washington State Cougar baseball team found themselves at 3-6 in Pac-10 conference play after the Arizona series and needing desparately to right their ship to stay in contention for a second consecutive NCAA post-season tournament berth. They got just what the doctor ordered when the #22 Oregon State Beavers came to town...the Cougars took the first two games of the series in convincing fashion, before OSU took a nail-biting victory in game three. By taking two out of three, Washington State is now 5-7 in the Pac-10 and 21-15 overall, while the Beavers fell to 4-8 in the Pac-10 and 21-13 overall. Cougar ace, Chad Arnold (4-2), was the story in game one, throwing a complete game at the Beavers. He dominated Oregon State, striking out 11 and only allowing five hits (none after the fifth inning) in Washington State's 5-1 victory. Washington State second baseman, Cody Bartlett, was the story in the Cougars demolition of the Beavers in game two. Bartlett went 3-4, with a single, a triple and his fourth home run of the season. His three RBI's and one run scored helped the Cougars torch Oregon State, 12-4. The Beavers scored once in the first off of Cougar starter, David Stilley (2-1), but Washington State answered with three runs in the third and then put the game away with eight runs in the fourth to build an 11-1 lead. Oregon State got their lone victory in the series by taking game three, 3-2. The Beavers scored two runs in the top of the first off of WSU starter, Travis Cook, and held on for the win. Washington State was led at the plate by Brett Jacobs and Michael Weber, each with two hits apiece. | Washington State came to Tuscon on a bit of a roll after disposing of top ranked Arizona State two games to one, and then defeating both Seattle U. and Gonzaga, but that roll came to a complete stop as the Cougs were swept by the Arizona Wildcats three games to none. Arizona took the first game, 5-3, the second game, 13-6, then came back from three runs down in the bottom of the ninth to win game three, 12-11. With the three setbacks, the Cougars dropped to 3-6 in Pac-10 conference play and 19-14 overall, while the #21 Wildcats upped their Pac-10 record to 7-5 and 26-9 overall. In the opener, Chad Arnold (3-2) pitched a complete game, but the Cougs could only muster four hits, with two of them, including a home run, coming from Derek Jones. It was all Wildcats in the second game, Arizona chased Cougar starter, David Stilley (1-1), in the fourth inning, breaking a 4-4 tie and extending their lead to 8-4. Four more Washington State pitchers couldn't ebb the tide, as the Wildcats added five more runs, while the second home run in as many days by Derek Jones, and two hit performances at the plate by both Jones and Michael Weber couldn't bring the Cougs back. If the first two games were tough to take for head coach Donnie Marbut and the team, the third game melt-down in the bottom of the ninth had to leave the Cougs reeling. Washington State fought back valiantly in the game, scoring three runs in the top of the eighth to take a 10-8 lead. The Cougs then added an insurance run in the top of the ninth to hand an 11-8 lead to ace closer, Adam Conley. However, the Wildcats sandwiched several singles around an error and a walk and were able to sneak four runs across the plate and sweep the Pac-10 series away with a 12-11 victory. | In non-conference mid-week action, the Washington State baseball team picked up two wins, first coming back in the eighth inning to dispatch Seattle University (4-23) on Tuesday in Wenatchee, 8-5, then came back the next night to take down the Gonzaga Bulldogs (12-20-1) at Bailey-Brayton Field, 5-4. With the twin victories, head coach Donnie Marbut and his Cougar squad move to 19-11 on the season. Against the Redhawks, WSU got strong relief pitching from James Wise, Seth Harvey, Paris Shewey and Adam Conley, all in relief of starter Bret DeRooy, with Shewey picking up his third win of the season, and Conley picking up his seventh save. The Cougs came back three times against Seattle U., finally putting the game away with four runs in the bottom of the eighth, the last two coming on senior Matt Fanelli's third home run of the season. Against the 'Zags, Paris Shewey (4-1) pitched two strong innings in relief of starter Spencer Jackson to get the win and help lead the Cougars to victory, 5-4. | After starting the Pac-10 season with a series loss to arch-rival Washington, Washington State head coach Donnie Marbut, and his Washington State baseball team, rebounded in a HUGE way, taking a three game series from #1 ranked Arizona State at Bailey-Brayton Field. WSU won the first game, 6-5, lost the second game to the Sun Devils, 11-7, and then won their first series from ASU in school history by winning the decisive third game, 9-5. In the opener, pinch hitter Patrick Claussen drilled a one out single in the bottom of the ninth to score Matt Argyropoulos from third with the winning run in hard fought 6-5 victory. Adam Conley (3-1) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the victory. Argyropoulos led the Cougar attack, going 2-4, with one RBI and scoring the winning run. ASU came back with a vengence to win the second game and even the series at 1-1, building a 10-1 lead through six innings before finally prevailing 11-7. In the decisive third game, WSU scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead and then put the game out of reach for Arizona State (28-3 overall, 6-3 in the Pac-10) with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Connor Lambert (2-1) picked up the victory with 2.2 innings of shutout relief for starter Travis Cook, and Adam Conley pitched a scoreless ninth for his sixth save of the season. Matt Argyropoulos and Derek Jones led the Cougs at the plate, each going 1-4 with two RBI's apiece. With the big series victory, the Cougars leveled their Pac-10 record at 3-3 on the season, and climbed to 17-11 overall. | Derek Jones hit a home run in the top of the first inning, but Washington State (15-10) couldn't muster much more at the plate, and BYU (13-14) broke a 2-2 tie with a home run of their own off of Cougar reliever Connor Lambert (1-1), as the Cougars from Provo, Utah, took the first game of a scheduled two game series with the Cougars from Pullman. The second game in the series, and in what is a story in itself for WSU this season, was cancelled, becoming the fourth game cancelled so far this season. The Cougars return home to open their second conference series of the season with top ranked Arizona State (28-1 / 2-1) coming town for a three game Pac-10 conference series on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. | The Washington State baseball team started Pac-10 play on the road with a three game series in Seattle against the University of Washington. The weather played a part in every game, including postponing Friday nights game, a game that became part of a Saturday doubleheader. Ultimately, the "Apple Cup" baseball series ended up being three tight, one-run ball games, with the Huskies winning the series 2-1. Washington won the first game of the series, 3-2, by scoring two unearned runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth off of stellar WSU closer, Adam Conley. Cougar ace, Chad Arnold, pitched a brilliant game for eight innings (one run on three hits, with 8 strikeouts), before giving way to Conley for the ninth inning. Washington State came back to win the second game, with a 6-5 victory that went 12 innings before being decided on a sacrifice fly by Shea Vucinich in the top of the 12th. Adam Conley pitched 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief to earn the victory. With the win, WSU moves to 15-8 overall (1-1 in the Pac-10), while the Huskies fall to 13-11 overall (1-1 in the Pac-10). The rubber game of the series was another one-run affair, with Washington taking the series with a 4-3 victory in game three. The Cougars immediately head out on the road for a two game series against another team of Cougars, taking on Brigham Young in Provo, Utah, on Monday and Tuesday. .
