Head coach Donnie Marbut and his Washington State squad won the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic baseball tournament in Lubbock, Texas, by getting off to a fast start against Texas Tech, forging a 7-1 lead after two innings behind the 2-3 offensive performance (3 rbi's and 1 run) of Matt Argyropoulos and the starting pitching of Rusty Shellhorn (career high 6 strikeouts in 4 innings of work), and finishing off the Red Raiders, 10-7. Paris Shewey (2-0) pitched the last two innings to pick up his second save of this young season. Head coach, Ken Bone, and his Washington State Cougar basketball team simply got too far behind in the first half, and a huge second half rally, spurred on by a raucous Friel Court crowd, was not quite enough to pull the Cougs all the way back for a victory over their arch-rival, as the Cougars ultimately lost to head coach Lorenzo Romar and his Washington Huskies, 59-52. Washington State was led by DeAngelo Casto, with 19 points, and Reggie Moore, with eight points, while Nikola Koprivica, the lone WSU senior who was recognized prior to the start of the contest, contributed eight rebounds, six points and three assists in his "Senior Night" game. With the loss, the Cougs drop to 16-12 on the season, and 6-10 in Pac-10 play. For more information on the "Apple Cup of basketball", click on the link to the official WSU Athletics web site. WSU ends the regular season this coming weekend on the road, with contests against the Oregon State Beavers (Thursday, March 4th) and the Oregon Ducks (Saturday, March 6th). April Cook, WSU sophomore sensation, was the only Cougar to finish in double figures, dropping in 14 points, as Washington State fell on the road to the Washington Huskies, their arch-rival, for the 29th straight time, 70-54. With the loss, the Lady Cougs drop to 7-20 on the season, and 2-14 in Pac-10 conference play. For more information on the game, go to the WSU Athletics web site. With the win, the Cougs are 3-0 in the tournament, with their final game of the tournament scheduled for tomorrow against the host school, Texas Tech. In addtion to his two homers, Jones went 3-4 with 2 RBI's, while scoring three times. The Washington State baseball team traveled to Lubbock, Texas, for four tournament games, two each with Bethune-Cookman and Texas Tech. The Cougs started the four game tourney road trip with a pair of victories today, first defeating Bethune-Cookman, 10-4, and then finishing off Texas Tech in the second game, 6-3. With the wins, WSU moves to 4-0 on the season. In the opener, Garry Kuykendall had three hits and led the Cougs past Bethune-Cookman, 10-4, and in the nightcap, Shea Vucinich had three hits to pace the offense and Chad Arnold (pictured above) helped pitch Washington State past Texas Tech, 6-3. For all the details on both games, head to the WSU Athletics web site (Bethune-Cookman game - Texas Tech game). Head coach, Donnie Marbut, and the Cougs take on Bethune-Cookman again tomorrow, and finish up the tournament with another battle with the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Sunday. Washington State University President, Dr. Elson Floyd, gave the Cougar Nation exactly what they wanted today...Bill Moos finally has the job he covets and is finally back at the school he loves! At a 2pm press conference, one that had to be moved to a bigger room to accommodate the larger than normal crowd of media and well-wishers, Dr. Floyd introduced Bill Moos as the newest athletic director at Washington State! Washington State rode the pitching of David Stilley and a 23 hit attack in sweeping away Seattle University, 23-0, at Bailey-Brayton Field. For additional details on today's game, head to the official WSU Athletics web site. Head coach, Donnie Marbut, and the Cougars now embark on a quick trip to Lubbock, Texas, for two games each with both Bethune-Cookman and Texas Tech, before returning home for a four game series with Utah. It was almost like head coach Ken Bone had brought back Bennett-Ball to the Palouse, as Washington State put the defensive clamps on USC, dropping the athletic and high-flying Trojans in Pullman, 51-47, to halt a three game Pac-10 conference losing streak. With the victory, the Cougars move to 6-9 in conference play and 16-11 overall. WSU has three regular season games remaining, and to have any kind of post-season hopes, the Cougars probably need to win at least two out of three, possibly even all three. In a game that former coach Tony Bennett would have loved, Washington State was led by their defensive effort on the Trojans, holding them to 38% from the floor (including just 2-14 from behind the three point line). Offensively, WSU was led by freshman Reggie Moore, with 12 points, and sophomore's DeAngelo Casto and Abe Lodwick, with 11 points each. The WSU Athletics web site has additional stats and information available on today's victory, a win that gives the Cougars a sweep of the season series with the Trojans. "Senior Night" is next on the agenda this coming Saturday as the arch-rival Washington Huskies invade Friel Court for a 7pm tip-off. Prior to the opening tip, the Cougars will honor their only senior, Nikola Koprivica. GO COUGS! - WSU Sports Photo Blog staff WSU Men's Basketball: 2009-2010 Season Schedule / Results |

The Washington State women's basketball team had a short one game Pac-10 conference winning streak snapped by the hot shooting UCLA Bruins at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, 93-58. The Cougars shot well, hitting 40% of their shots, but they allowed the Bruins to finish the game hitting almost 60% from the floor. Freshman Carly Noyes led the Lady Cougs with 15 points and 5 rebounds, while sophomore's Jazmine Perkins and Danielle LeNoir responded with 11 points and 8 steals respectively. For additional game stats and information, check out the WSU Athletics web site. With the loss, head coach June Daugherty's Lady Cougs fall to 2-13 in Pac-10 conference play and 7-19 overall. Next up for WSU is a trip to arch-rival Washington in Seattle on Saturday, with gametime set for 2pm (pacific time) at Bank of America Arena. Led by the 3 hit performances of juniors Garry Kuykendall and Matt Argyropoulos, and the pitching of redshirt junior Chad Arnold (1-0), head coach Donnie Marbut and his Washington State Cougar baseball team opened the 2010 season with a solid 11-6 victory over Seattle University at Bailey-Brayton Field. Argyropoulos had a double and a dinger, while driving in three runs, and Kuykendall scored three times, while driving in two runs. Arnold pitched four innings, allowing four runs on six hits, while walking three batters and striking out two. For additional details on today's victory, head to the official WSU Athletics web site by clicking HERE. The Cougs play Seattle University again tomorrow, with the first pitch scheduled for noon at Bailey-Brayton Field. The Washington State women's basketball team went on the road to face USC at the Galen Center, and came away with their second Pac-10 conference win of the season, beating the Trojans, 64-52. The Lady Cougs were led by freshman point guard Kiki Moore, with 19 points, and super-sophomore April Cook, with 18 points. For more of the happy totals and highlights of the Cougars second conference road win of the season, go to the WSU Athletics web site. The Cougars don't have much time to celebrate their victory down in Los Angeles, as they move over to Pauley Pavilion to take on the UCLA Bruins on Saturday. Washington State's Reggie Moore broke out of his shooting slump, but Klay Thompson and Nikola Koprivica didn't bring their shooting touch to Friel Court, as the Cougs shot an abysmal 3-19 (15.8%) from behind the three point line, and only 36% from the field overall, and lost to the UCLA Bruins, 71-51. Unfortunately, while WSU wasn't hitting from the floor, they also weren't playing much defense, letting the Bruins shoot over 70% from the floor for a majority of the game (they finished the night shooting 65.9%). Reggie Moore led WSU with 11 points (3-5 from the floor and 5-6 from the line), 4 steals and 3 assists, while DeAngelo Casto chipped in 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. With the loss, head coach Ken Bone and his troops drop to 5-9 in Pac-10 conference play and 15-10 overall, with their post-season hopes now hanging by a thread. Washington State head baseball coach, Donnie Marbut, and his team open their 2010 campaign with a two game series against Seattle University, starting this Saturday at noon at Bailey-Brayton Field. The second game is on Sunday, with another noon first pitch game time. The Cougars are looking to expand upon last year's second place finish in the Pac-10 conference (19-8 in conference play, and 32-25 overall), and first trip to the NCAA tournament since 1990. Although last year's staff ace, Matt Way (drafted in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Philadelphia Phillies), and closer, Jeremy Johnson (drafted in the 13th round by the Cleveland Indians), are gone, pitching still looks to be a Cougar strength this season. Last year's second day starter, redshirt junior right-hander Chad Arnold (8-3 overall last season), looks to take over the staff ace role, while redshirt sophomore left-hander, David Stilley (3-3 last season), looks to move in to the Saturday starter role in Pac-10 play. Sophomore lefty, Adam Conley, appears set to take over the closer role this season. In the infield the Cougs bring back a number of starters and players who saw significant action from last season, including Michael Weber, Shea Vucinich, Matt Argyropoulos, Ryan Peterson, Cody Bartlett and Jay Ponciano. In the outfield, Washington State brings back experience with Derek Jones, Garry Kuykendall and Patrick Claussen. Stayed tuned to the WSU Sports Photo Blog over the weekend as we will be giving the entire 2010 WSU baseball schedule it's own page, and we will be tracking Coach Marbut and the Cougs on a game-by-game basis as they look for their second straight trip to the NCAA tournament, and hopefully a trip to Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha at the end of the season! Sophomore Jazmine Perkins scored a career-high 26 points, on 11 of 14 shooting from the floor, but it wasn't near enough as only one other WSU player hit double figures, freshman Carly Noyes tallied 13 points to go along with her 3 blocks, and the Lady Cougs fell to 2nd ranked Stanford, 98-67. With the victory, Stanford improved to 23-1 overall on the season and a perfect 13-0 in the Pac-10 conference, while Washington State fell to 6-18 overall and 1-12 in the Pac-10 conference. WSU hits the road for the next three games, traveling to USC, UCLA and then to arch-rival Washington, before returning home for their last two conference games of the season. In what is becoming an alarmingly consistent pattern, the Washington State basketball team built another solid first half lead against the Pac-10 conference leading Cal Bears, only to fall apart in the second half and lose, 86-70. With the loss, the Cougar hoop team falls to 15-10 overall and 5-8 in the Pac-10 conference. Klay Thompson seemed to find his shot in the first half, scoring 23 points, but it vanished again in the second half, where he netted only 5 more points, finishing with 28 on the night. Other players figuring in the scoring were DeAngelo Casto, with 13, and Marcus Capers and Reggie Moore, who both finished with 9 points. Ken Bone and his troops hope to right their ship, starting on Thursday night when they return home to face UCLA. Their next three games are all at home, which is a perfect remedy to get them back to their winning ways. It is rumored that this coming Monday, San Diego State University will be announcing it's new athletic director at a press conference, and the new AD will be, now former, Washington State athletic director, Jim Sterk. University President, Dr. Elson Floyd, has released a statement to the media that is available on the official WSU Athletics web site, and you can link directly to it HERE. Here a couple of other detailed articles on the situation as it is unfolding, one at Cougfan.com, and another from the Spokesman Review sports blog. Jim Sterk has served as the athletic director at Washington State University since taking over for embattled Rick Dickson in June 2000. As details come to light, especially regarding the search for a new athletic director at WSU, we will post new information. GO COUGS! - WSU Sports Photo Blog staff |

Head coach June Daugherty, and her Lady Coug basketball team, couldn't sustain the momentum from last week's road victory at Arizona State, and fell at home in Pac-10 conference play to the California Bears, 62-44. Poor shooting, from both the field and the free throw line, did in Washington State, as the Cougars shot only 28.6% from the field for the game, and only 50% from the free throw line. Sophomore Jazmine Perkins led the Cougs in scoring with 13 points (going 5-15 from the floor), while freshman Kiki Moore was the only other player in double figures, netting 10 points (going 3-13 from the floor). For more information, including box scores and game notes, head to the WSU Athletics web site. With the loss, the Lady Cougs fall to 6-17 on the season, and 1-11 in Pac-10 conference play. With a large crowd of over 400 Cougar fans in attendance, along with a large contingent of former football stars, now known as "Cougar Legends", this year's "Night with Cougar Football" should be considered nothing but a huge success! The highlights were many, and included: * Current Cougar football player, redshirt freshman Nolan Washington, taking over the microphone part way through the "live auction" portion of the event and energizing the crowd with the ease of a veteran broadcaster, helping to bring in donations at the event of over $75,000 for Cougar Athletics! * Washington, again, taking the microphone and leading the entire crowd in singing "Happy Birthday" to fellow Coug quarterback, Jeff Tuel, who also seemed very adept behind the microphone (in fact, all three current players in attendance, Nolan Washington, Jeff Tuel and Gino Simone, all handled public speaking like they had been doing it forever). * Former Cougar All-American safety, Paul Sorensen, talking shop with Nolan Washington prior to the start of the dinner, and getting Washington so fired up with his "tricks of the trade", it looked like Nolan was ready to don his pads right then and there and hit somebody! * Ryan Leaf loves to go fishing, fishing for donations for Cougar athletics! * Coach Levy's taking the mic and letting everyone know what he thinks of this year's incoming recruiting class and what he thinks of last year's class. * Head coach Paul Wulff showing video clips on each of this year's recruits, and every time one of them took off for the endzone (in a high school game, mind you), cheering could be heard throughout the crowd...Cougar fans are ready to have something to cheer about! * Signed jersey's from the like's of Jason Gesser, Jack Thompson and Robbie Tobeck, signed helmets, fishing trips with legendary quarterbacks, sideline passes, luxury suites at games with "athletic directors to be named later"...it was a great night of Cougar football! Just like in their previous game against Stanford, Ken Bone and his Washington State Cougar men's basketball team built a big first half lead and then watched as the Cardinal came back. However, this time on the road in Palo Alto, the Cougs were not able to hold on and win, as Stanford came back from an 18 point deficit to defeat Washington State, 60-58. Klay Thompson led the Cougs in scoring, with 19 points, and DeAngelo Casto had another double-double, with 15 points and 10 rebounds, but no other Cougars scored in double figures in the contest. For additional details, head to the WSU Athletics web site. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 5-7 in the Pac-10 conference and 15-9 overall. The Cougars were led by sophomore DeAngelo Casto, who had an outstanding game with 19 points (8 of 13 from the field), 9 rebounds, 3 blocks and a steal. Head coach Donnie Marbut and the Washington State Cougar baseball team open their 2010 season later this month, on February 20th, against Seattle University at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman. The Cougs will be looking to improve on their successes of last season when they took second place in the Pac-10 conference and advanced to the NCAA tournament. Today the National College Baseball Writers Association came out with their pre-season Division I Baseball Top 35 Poll, and, although the Cougs were not in their immediate top 35, they were one of several teams that received votes in the poll. To see the entire pre-sesason poll, click HERE. Only 4 Pac-10 teams made the top 35, and Washington State was the only other Pac-10 team that received votes in the poll. Additional information is available at the official WSU Athletics web site. There is also a great pre-season article on the team available at CougZone.com.
