Several Washington State track and field athletes traveled to Miramar, Florida, to compete in the NACAC (North American, Central American, Caribbean) Under 23 Championships. Cougar junior, Jeshua Anderson, won the gold medal in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 49.33 seconds, outdistancing competitors from the Domincan Republic, the United States, the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobego and Jamaica in the finals. Other members of the WSU track team competing were Marissa Tschida, who finished third in the women's javelin, and Anna Layman, who also finished third in her specialty, the women's 800 meter run. After a disappointing performance at the NCAA Track & Field Championships last month, Washington State freshman high jumper, Holly Parent, went back to her home country to compete in the Canadian Junior Track & Field Championships in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, and came away with a national championship in her specialty, the high jump! To win the event, Parent cleared 5 feet - 9 3/4 inches on her second attempt, and she was the only competitor to clear that height. At the end of May, Parent cleared her personal record height of 5 feet - 11 1/4 inches at the NCAA West Regional / Preliminary Round Track & Field Championships in Austin, Texas, which qualified her for the NCAA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, last month. Unfortunately, in Eugene, Parent failed in her initial three attempts to make the opening height of 5 feet - 7 3/4 inches and was eliminated from the competition. With the momentum from this victory, Holly Parent should be all ready to go for her sophomore season, a season she hopes will again lead her to the NCAA Championships! .
