BASKETBALL: COUGS LEAD AT HALF BUT FALL APART IN SECOND HALF, FALL TO ARCH-RIVAL HUSKIES ON THE ROAD, 92-64

Head coach Ken Bone and his Washington State Cougars led at halftime on the road against arch-rival Washington, but shot an abysmal 22.9% from the field in the second half while allowing the Huskies to shoot 62.5%, in ultimately losing in blow-out fashion to head coach Lorenzo Romar and his Husky squad, 92-64.

The Cougars were led by true freshman, Xavier Thames, who had a career high 15 points, and Nikola Koprivica and Reggie Moore, both with 13 points each. Klay Thompson had another rough shooting night, going 2-15 from the floor, including just 1-6 from behind the arch.

For more details on the contest, head to the WSU Athletics web site.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: LADY COUGS GO TO OVERTIME, BUT FALL TO WASHINGTON YET AGAIN, 76-70

The Washington State women's basketball team was trying to break a 28 game losing streak to their arch-rival, as well as trying to get their first Pac-10 conference win of the season, but it was not to be, as the Cougars got the game to overtime but couldn't pull out a monumental-type win, losing to the Huskies in OT, 76-70.

WSU was led by April Cook, with 17 points, Jazmine Perkins, with 15 points, and Kiki Moore, with 13 points.

With the loss, the Cougs fall to 5-15 on the season, and 0-9 in Pac-10 conference play. For more details, go to the WSU Athletics web site.

To start the second half of conference play, head coach June Daugherty and the Cougars head to the desert to take on Arizona and Arizona State, on Thursday and Saturday respectively.

BASKETBALL: COUGARS FAIL IN ATTEMPT TO SWEEP LA SCHOOLS ON THE ROAD, FALL TO UCLA, 74-62

After beating USC in Los Angeles on Thursday, the Washington State Cougar basketball team was hoping to get an LA sweep by beating UCLA at Pauley Pavilion, but a second half surge by the Bruins kept that from happening and the Cougs fell to UCLA, 74-62. WSU is now 2-52 against the Bruins in Los Angeles.

Freshman point guard, Reggie Moore, led the Cougars on the offensive side of the ball with 24 points, while Klay Thompson pumped in 13 and Nikola Koprivica added 11 as the only Cougs in double figures.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: LADY COUGS HOLD HALFTIME LEAD OVER USC, BUT CAN'T HANG ON AND FALL TO TROJANS, 61-51

Leading 2nd place USC at halftime, 32-27, the Washington State women's basketball team looked to be on the verge of their first Pac-10 conference victory, but the Trojans stormed back after halftime and defeated the Cougars in Pullman, 61-51.

Freshman Carly Noyes and sophomore April Cook led the Cougars with 10 points apiece as the only two players in double figures. With the loss, Washington State falls to 5-14 on the season and 0-8 in Pac-10 play. The Cougs will look for their first league victory on Friday night, January 29th, when they host arch-rival Washington at Friel Court.

BASKETBALL: WASHINGTON STATE SECOND HALF RALLY CARRIES COUGS TO ROAD WIN OVER USC TROJANS, 67-60

Led by the 21 points and 6 assists of true freshman point guard Reggie Moore, the 20 points of sophomore sensation Klay Thompson, the sharp second half shooting of lone senior Nikola Koprivica and the 5 blocks of sophomore DeAngelo Casto, the Washington State Cougars were able to overcome a 15 point second half deficit and defeat the USC Trojans at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, 67-60. This road Pac-10 conference win was huge for the extremely young Cougar team, and should give them ample amounts of confidence to close out the first half of the conference schedule with two more road games, at UCLA on Saturday and at arch-rival Washington the following Saturday.

For all the happy details, head to the official WSU Athletics web site.

The Cougars are now 14-5 overall this season, and 4-3 in Pac-10 conference play.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: LADY COUGS MOUNT HUGE COMEBACK, BUT CAN'T HOLD BRIEF LATE LEAD, FALL TO UCLA, 59-56

The Washington State women's basketball team fell behind UCLA 11-0 at the start of the game, and only hit on 11.5 percent of their first half shots (3 of 26) to trail by 15 at the break, and still found a way to battle back in to the game and take their first, and only, lead with 1:35 left. However, the Cougs weren't able to hold off the Bruins in the end and lost their seventh straight Pac-10 conference game, 59-56.

The Lady Cougs were led by sophomores, April Cook and Jazmine Perkins, with 19 and 16 points respectively, and by freshman Kiki Moore, with 11 points.

For more details on the game, head to the WSU Athletics web site.

BASKETBALL: COUGARS START SLOW ONCE AGAIN, BUT PREVAIL OVER STANFORD, 77-73

Continuing an alarming trend, the Washington State basketball team started slowly once again, this time falling behind Stanford 10-2 at the outset of the game. However, tonight was different than Thursday and the Cougars came roaring back, building a twenty point lead by halftime, 46-26. Unfortunately for the Cougar fans in attendance and those listening on the radio, this game would not be a cake-walk and the lead evaporated in the second half behind a barrage of Cardinal three pointers to make it a close game at the end. Fortunately, the Cougs made their lead hold up behind solid free throw shooting from freshman guard Reggie Moore down the stretch, to prevail in the end, 77-73.

Washington State was led by sophomore Klay Thompson, with 27 points, and sophomore Marcus Capers and senior Nikola Koprivica, both with 10 points.

The WSU Athletics web site has many more details on the Cougs Pac-10 conference victory, a win that levels their conference record at 3-3 and ups their overall record to 13-5.

The Cougars must now head out on the road for three straight conference match-ups, starting next week with a game at USC on Thursday, followed on Saturday with a tilt with UCLA at Pauley Pavillion. WSU then finishes the first half of conference play in Seattle against arch-rival Washington the following Saturday.

PHOTO: The Washington State women's basketball coaching staff, led by head coach, June Daugherty, has had their work cut out for them with their very young team this season in Pac-10 conference play, as the Cougars lost their sixth straight conference game, 75-68, to the Cal Bears in Berkeley.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: LADY COUGARS CONFERENCE LOSING STREAK HITS SIX, AS WASHINGTON STATE FALLS TO CAL, 75-68

The Lady Cougars finally found their shooting touch, scorching the nets for a season-high 45.8 percent (27 of 59 from the floor), but it still wasn't enough as Washington State lost their sixth straight Pac-10 conference game of the season, this time falling to the Cal Bears in Berkeley, 75-68. Although it may not look like it when you look only at their record, the Cougs are very young and most of their conference losses have been very close, which is a huge improvement over the last few years.

April Cook, Wazzu sophomore guard, led the Cougs against the Bears with 16 points, while freshman sensation, Kiki Moore, poured in 13 points and handed out eight assists.

Head to the official WSU Athletics web site for more information on tonight's Cougs vs. Cal conference tilt.

BASKETBALL: WASHINGTON STATE DIGS GIGANTIC HOLE EARLY, FIGHTS BACK, BUT ULTIMATELY FALLS TO CAL, 93-88

After starting slowly in several games lately, the Washington State basketball team continued the trend once again, this time falling behind by 20 points in the first eight minutes of their Pac-10 conference game against California. The Cougars managed to fight back in to the game, trailing by only four at the break, but could never get all the way back, and fell to the Bears in a high scoring battle at Friel Court, 93-88.

The Cougs were led by a career-high 25 points from freshman, Reggie Moore, and 18 from scoring machine, Klay Thompson. Nikola Koprivica, with 15 points, on 6 of 9 shooting from the floor, and Xavier Thames, with 10 points, on 5 of 7 shooting from the floor, contributed significantly off of the Wazzu bench.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: STANFORD SHOWS WHY THEY ARE RANKED NUMBER TWO, LADY COUGARS LOSE TO CARDINAL, 80-43

The Washington State women's basketball team found out why Stanford is ranked number two in the nation, as the Cougars fell hard to the Cardinal in Palo Alto, 80-43. The Lady Cougs drop to 0-5 in conference play and 5-11 overall, and stay on the road for another Pac-10 conference game against California on Saturday.

Freshman Kiki Moore led WSU in scoring, with 14 points, while April Cook and Katie Madison both netted 8 points each. The Cougars were a miserable 18 of 72 from the floor (25 percent) and 3 of 10 from the foul line (30 percent).

BASKETBALL: COUGS SHOOT POORLY, FALL HARD AT ARIZONA STATE, 71-46

After a dramatic win at Arizona on Friday, Washington State didn't have much left in the tank and fell to Arizona State, and their tough zone defense, 71-46 in Tempe. The Cougars shot a season low 29.8 percent from the field, and, to make matters worse, head coach, Ken Bone, didn't start his regular line-up against the Sun Devils, benching two starters for being late to a team meeting.

No Cougars got to double figures in the contest, with Klay Thompson finished as the high scorer with 9 points, well under his 23.9 points per game average. Reggie Moore and Marcus Capers both finished with 8 points each. With the loss, Washington State falls to 2-2 in conference play, and 12-4 overall.

Led by April Cook, with 11 points, and Jazmine Perkins, with 10 points, the Washington State Cougars were again close, and even had the lead late in the contest, but ultimately fell to the 24th ranked Arizona State Sun Devils at Friel Court, 64-59.

BASKETBALL: PAC-10 REFEREES CAN'T CHANGE THE OUTCOME OF THIS ONE...COUGARS WIN ON LAST SECOND CASTO SHOT, 78-76

The Washington State basketball team got a coveted Pac-10 conference road win in their first conference road game of the season, as DeAngelo Casto hit another last second shot, this time with 0:00.1 left in regulation, to lead the Cougars to a 78-76 victory over the Arizona Wildcats. And, best of all, the Pac-10 conference officials working this game didn't step in and try to alter the actual outcome of the game this time.

Washington State fell behind 10-0 to start, but came roaring back, led by the double-double of April Cook, who dropped in 15 points, and the 15 rebounds of Carly Noyes. Unfortunately, WSU could never quite catch the Wildcats in falling to 5-9 on the season (0-3 in Pac-10 conference games).

BASKETBALL: PAC-10 OFFICIALS DON'T "STEAL" THIS ONE, COUGARS GET FIRST CONFERENCE WIN AGAINST OREGON STATE, 65-60

Despite an uncharacteristic performance from star guard Klay Thompson, who fouled out with 7 points, the Washington State Cougars rebounded from the "Pac-10 referee debacle" (as it will now forever be known as) against Oregon by defeating Oregon State, 65-60, for their first conference victory. With the win, the Cougs improve to 11-3 overall, and 1-1 in Pac-10 conference play.

The Cougars were led in scoring by Reggie Moore, with a career-high 19 points, and Marcus Capers, who garnerd a double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Cougs also got strong performances off of the bench from redshirt freshman, James Watson, who had his best game thus far in his young career, with 7 points (2-3 from the floor and 3-4 from the line) and taking two critical charges, and freshman, Xavier Thames, with 8 points and a solid 4-4 from the free throw line. The game would not have been close if Washington State would have converted their free throws, shooting an uncharacteristic 55.2% from the line (16-29).

Head to the WSU Athletics web site for more detailed information on the Cougars first Pac-10 win of the season.

BLOG NEWS & NOTES

Ken Bone
Ken Bone - Washington State Basketball
PHOTO: Washington State head basketball coach, Ken Bone, was not happy with the technical call made by the Pac-10 officials at the end of the first overtime in the Cougars New Years Eve game, a call that ultimately cost the Cougars a victory.

BASKETBALL: UPDATE ON PAC-10 OFFICIALS TECHNICAL CALL...WAS IT CORRECTLY CALLED PER THE NCAA RULEBOOK?

No matter how the lead Pac-10 game official, Mike Littlewood, tries to explain it or spin it, if you read the NCAA rulebook, the technical foul call made by the Pac-10 conference officiating crew of Mike Littlewood, Tony Padilla and Bruce Hicks at the end of the first overtime of the Oregon vs. Washington State game on New Year's Eve was incorrect and Oregon's Tajuan Porter should not have been allowed to even attempt the two free throws he made to send the game to a second overtime.

IN REVIEW (from last night's blog after the game):
After seemingly winning the game on a DeAngelo Casto finger roll at the end of the first overtime, head coach Ken Bone watched in utter disgust as the Pac-10 officiating crew (Mike Littlewood, Tony Padilla and Bruce Hicks) huddled up and called a bench celebration technical (for players being on the court) with 3 tenths of a second left in the game. The Cougars were up by two at the time, but Tajuan Porter made both "gifted" technical foul shots to send the game to a second overtime. The Ducks won the game in the second overtime on a basket with 5 tenths of a second left, 91-89. Duck players spilled out on to the floor after their "winning" basket with time still left on the clock, but one of the officials had called a foul on WSU on the play (even though on replays it was obvious that Oregon's Malcolm Armstead had used his forearm to shove Klay Thompson out of the way to clear enough space to put up his shot), thus creating a dead ball situation.

HERE'S THE VIDEO REPLAY FROM ESPN FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN IT:

From the video replay you can see that no Oregon player ever attempted to try to inbound the basketball after Casto's basket, they, in fact, did the opposite and held on to the ball themselves, creating the delay in the continuation of play. They thought the game was over and they had lost. Per the NCAA rulebook, the only time a delay can lead to a technical (and even then, this rule is never enforced at the end of a game) is if the player(s) or fan(s) causing the delay actually prevent the opposing team from inbounding the ball. The rule is very specific and it is obvious from the call that was made in the game, the Pac-10 crew officiating the game were not properly trained and did not know or understand the rulebook that they were supposed to be enforcing during the game.

HERE'S THE NCAA RULE:

Section 17. Delay

Art. 1. A delay is any action that impedes the progress or continuity of the game. Such actions include, but are not limited to:

a. Failure to supply scorers with data per Rule 3-3.1 (See Rule 10-2.2.a);

b. Consuming a full minute by not being ready when it is time to start either half or any extra period (See Rule 10-2.5.a);

c. Delaying the game by preventing the ball from being promptly made live or by preventing continuous play, such as but not limited to, followers or bench personnel entering the playing court before player activity has been terminated. When the delay does not interfere with play, it shall be ignored, and play shall be continued or be resumed at the point of interruption (See Rule 10-2.9.d, 10-4.7 and 10-6.2.h);

d. Repeatedly delaying the game by preventing the ball from being promptly put into play, such as delaying the administration of a throw-in or free throw by engaging in a team huddle anywhere on the playing court (See Rule 10-2.5.b);

e. Failure to have the court ready for play after the final horn to end any timeout (See Rule 10-2.5.c);

f. Attempting to gain an advantage by interfering with the ball after a goal or by failing to immediately pass the ball to the nearest official after a whistle is blown (See Rule 10-3.11 and 10-6.1.m); or

g. (Women) The opponents of the thrower-in having any part of their person beyond the vertical inside plane of any boundary line before the ball has crossed that boundary line. (See Rule 10-3-7.)

Art. 2. One team warning shall be given for each of the delays in Rule 4-17.1.d through g. Each warning shall be reported to the official scorer. Thereafter, a technical foul shall be assessed for the delay that has previously received a team warning.

The Cougar Nation will be looking forward to hearing what the Pac-10 Conference office and the new commissioner, Larry Scott, have to say about this situation.

COMMENTARY: While we can all hope that the new commissioner of the Pac-10 conference, Larry Scott, will do something to fix the situation that has earned the conference the reputation nationwide of having the worst officials in football and basketball in Division 1 athletics, but it's probably a better "bet" that the Pac-10 will continue status quo and continue to allow their officials to "grandstand" and try to determine the outcome of games that they are officiating, instead of allowing the players to decide the outcomes on the field or on the court.
