After twelve straight wins to start out the season, the Washington State volleyball team finally met with defeat today, falling to the #7 ranked team in the country, the Oregon Ducks, 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 22-25, 21-25), at McArthur Court in Eugene, Oregon. The Cougars were led by sophomore Meagan Ganzer (pictured above), who had a career high 19 kills and a .457 hitting percentage. Senior Cassie Robbins also had an outstanding day (17 kills), as did Renee Bordelon (47 assists) and freshman Oceana Bush (18 digs). As usual, for all the match details, head to the WSU Athletics web site and to CougZone for great articles and the box scores. Next up for Washington State (12-1, 1-1 Pac-10) is a tussle this coming Friday night with #21 Arizona (12-1, 1-1 Pac-10) at Bohler Gym on the WSU campus in Pullman, Washington. Pete Carroll (pictured above), and the rest of his University of Southern California Trojans, jumped out to an early 20-0 lead and then held on to defeat the Washington State Cougars tonight at the Coliseum in Los Angeles, 27-6. It was USC's 11th straight victory on their home turf. The Cougs, despite playing a large number of underclassmen due to injuries and ineffective play, played a much better game against the Trojans this season after being completely throttled at home last year by Mark Sanchez and the Trojans, 69-0. USC is definitely not the same without Sanchez leading the offense. Senior Dwight Tardy scored WSU's only touchdown of the night, with a mere 22 seconds left in the game. The drive was led by freshman, Jeff Tuel, who got his first taste of college football when he entered the game in the second quarter. Go the WSU Athletics web site for all the game details, including recaps, notes, stats and photos. Another great article is available at the Washington State Cougars Examiner. Washington State athletic director, Jim Sterk, today announced "TEAM BUILT", the official launch of Phase III of the Martin Stadium expansion project. When completed, Phase III will add 2,200 additional premium seats in suites, loge boxes and indoor and outdoor club seating areas on top of the north stands. Once 80% of the premium seats have been spoken for, the construction of Phase III will begin, hopefully finishing in time for the 2011 football season. For more information on the project and details on what you can do to help bring Phase III to fruition, go to the WSU Athletic departments' official Martin Stadium web site at martinstadium.org. Once there you will also find great renderings of what Phase III will look like (or you can go directly to the renderings by clicking here)...and a detailed article about the project on the WSU Athletics site that is available here. There are also several other great articles on the project at CougZone, the Washington State Cougars Examiner, Cougfan and at the Spokesman-Review Sports Link Blog. Washington State's leading rusher thus far this season, James Montgomery (#21), has been lost to the Cougars for the remainder of the season following emergency surgery on Sunday morning on his left leg for acute compartment syndrome. According to reports from the Spokesman-Review, with acute compartment syndrome, the swelling and/or bleeding in the muscle compartment can put pressure on the capillaries and nerves, and if left untreated it can cause permanent disability or even death. Because of the seriousness of the situation, emergency surgery was performed by team physician, Dr. Ed Tingstad, early Sunday morning. We wish James all the best in his recovery. After dispatching the Texas Longhorns in Austin, Texas, the Cougar soccer team traveled to Nacogdoches, Texas, and completed their road trip sweep of the state of Texas in a convincing 5-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin University. WSU was led in scoring by Kiersten Dallstream, with two goals (her eighth and ninth of the season), freshman Brandi Vega (pictured above), with a goal (her fourth of the season) and two assists, and goals by Emma Stolz and Megan Chapin. While the offense continued to find the net, Cougar goalies were outstanding in goal again in recording their second straight shutout (and fourth so far in the early going this season). With the victory, Washington State moved to 6-2 on the season. For complete details of the match, go to the WSU Athletics web site and to CougZone. Next up for the Cougs is Weber State in Pullman on Friday, September 25th at 3pm. GO COUGS! - WSU Sports Photo Blog staff |

Down 24-7 early in the 3rd quarter, Washington State exploded for in a huge second half rally to ultimately tie the game with 28 seconds left in the 4th quarter on a 7 yard scoring strike from Marshall Lobbestael (pictured above) to Jared Karstetter, and then win the game in overtime on a 39 yard Nico Grasu field goal, 30-27. The Cougar defense gets major props for leading the comeback, as they ran back two interceptions for touchdowns, a 52 yard pick for six by Alex Hoffman-Ellis late in the third quarter, and a 67 yard interception return by Myron Beck with 10:07 left in the game. In the overtime period, Washington State's Chima Nwachukwu intercepted SMU quarterback, Bo Levi Mitchell, in the end zone on the Mustangs first play in overtime. The Cougars got the ball, ran it three times to set up for a game winning field goal, and Nico Grasu connected from 39 yards out to secure the victory. For all the game details, head to the official WSU Athletics web site. Next up for the football team is a road game against an angry USC Trojan team in Los Angeles on Saturday, September 26th. Head coach Matt Potter and his Washington State soccer team went on the road to Austin, Texas, to take on the Texas Longhorns, and came away with a very impressive 4-0 shutout victory. With the win, the Cougar soccer team improves to 5-2 on the season. Texas, highly ranked in the pre-season polls, had knocked WSU out of the NCAA tournament last season, but the Cougs came out fast and put the game away early. After building a commanding 3-0 lead before halftime (on goals by true freshman Brandi Vega, Elysse Van Leer and Emma Stolz), sophomore Jacquelyn Roth (pictured above) finished off the scoring in the 72nd minute. Cougar goalie, Meghan Berlingo, kept the 'Horns out of the net and recorded her third shutout of the season. Jeshua Anderson, Washington State junior wide receiver on the football team, announced today that he is leaving the football team to concentrate solely on his track and field career. Considering the fact that Anderson, in his first two years at WSU, won the Pac-10 conference and NCAA championships in the 400 meter hurdles in BOTH seasons, it is understandable that he would want to focus on the sport that he has a very bright future in. To read about all of the details on Anderson's decision, including comments from head football coach Paul Wulff and Jeshua Anderson himself, go to the WSU Athletics web site. Vince Grippi also has a great article from his interview with Anderson on his Spokesman-Review SportsLink Blog. GO COUGS! - WSU Sports Photo Blog staff |

You can't win football games against anyone when you turn the ball over seven times, and the Cougar football team did just that in losing to Hawaii at their annual Qwest Field game in Seattle, Washington, on Saturday, losing 38-20. After committing five of their turnovers in the first half, WSU found themselves behind 35-6 at the half. The second half went a bit better, but the first half hole they had dug for themselves proved to be too much to overcome in the loss. One of the bright spots for Washington State was running back James Montgomery, who ran the ball 17 times for 119 yards on the day. For all the disappointing details, click on the link for the official WSU Athletics web site article, box score, photos and game notes. Next on the schedule for the Cougars is SMU at home on Saturday, September 19th. Come out to Martin Stadium to show your support and help root the Cougs on to victory! In the finale on Saturday, the Cougs again defeated the Matadors of Cal State Northridge, this time in convincing fashion, 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-22). The Washington State soccer team fell behind early to #18 Brigham Young, but a goal by Kiersten Dallstream just before halftime and a goal by Carly Dobratz in the 68th minute of the second half led the Cougars to victory, 2-1. With the win, WSU goes to 4-2 on the season, while BYU falls to 3-2-1. Dallstream's goal was her 7th of this young season, good enough for the lead in the Pac-10 conference, and was the 24th of her career. For Dobratz, the game winning kick was the 7th of her career, moving her in to 3rd place all-time in Cougar history for game winners. For all the details, go to the game recap article on the official WSU Athletics web site, and to CougZone. The Washington State volleyball team stopped off at Weber State on the way back from their championship in the Utah Valley La Quinta Inn & Suites Invitational tournament to take on the Wildcats and came away with a 3-0 victory, their 7th in a row to start the season. The Cougars methodically took control and took the match by the scores of 25-20, 25-17 and 25-22. By starting out the season 7-0, second year head coach, Andrew Palileo, and the Cougars are off to their best start since 2002, when they started the season 11-0 and made the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament. Stanford 39 at Washington State 13: In the only conference game of the weekend, the Cardinal got the best of the Cougs, but Washington State showed that they are much improved over last season. The Cardinal will prove to be a tough opponent for everyone on their schedule, with a great deal of experience on both sides of the ball (Stanford returned 8 starters on both offense and defense this year...including battering ram running back, Toby Gerhart). Stanford (1-0, Pac-10 1-0)...Washington State (0-1, Pac-10 0-1) Boise State 19 - Oregon 8: The Sports Illustrated curse lives on....(August 17, 2009 college pre-season preview cover...QB Jeremiah Masoli and C Jordan Holmes graced the cover in their new...ummm... uniforms)....especially for senior running back LeGarrette Blount (#9 - pictured above). Not only were the Ducks soundly beaten by Boise State in their opener (they didn't get their initial first down of the season until midway through the 3rd...that's correct...the 3rd...quarter), but LeGarrette Blount probably wishes he hadn't made the quotes that made their way in to the Sports Illustrated article about what Oregon was going to do to Boise State to pay them back for last year. The Ducks didn't put up much of a fight in the game (pun intended) and Blount lost total control after the game and punched Boise State's Byron Hout on the chin, hit one of his own teammates who was trying to restrain him and then had to be held back from going after Bronco fans too. The "incident' has cost Blount a game suspension for the entire rest of the season...but he gets to keep his scholarship and must continue to go to practice (hmmm....how long do you think he will stay on campus and continue to go to practice??). Boise State (1-0)...Oregon (0-1) GO COUGS! - WSU Sports Photo Blog staff |

The Cougar soccer team traveled all the way to the other corner of the United States to test their skills against the 5th ranked team in the nation, the Florida State Seminoles. Unfortunately for Washington State, the Seminoles showed why they are ranked so high in dispatching the Cougar soccer squad, 4-1. With the loss, the WSU falls to 3-2 on the season. FSU had already built a 3-0 lead before Kiersten Dallstream (#3 - pictured above) finally got the Cougars on the board with her 6th goal of the season, and 23rd of her career, in the 65th minute in the second half. Florida State closed out the scoring after the Dallstream tally to solidify their high national ranking. The next match on tap for Washington State is at home, at Cougarland Field, on Thursday, September 10th, at 3pm against BYU. For complete game recaps, check CougZone and the WSU Athletic site. The Cougars are off to a perfect 6-0 start so far this season, winners of both tournaments that they participated in. WSU senior setter, Renee Bordelon, was named the tournament MVP. The Cougar football team, led by starting quarterback Kevin Lopina (#9 - pictured above), looked much improved in many aspects on the field, but still lost their 2009 season opener to the Stanford Cardinal, 39-13. Head man, Jim Harbaugh, and his Stanford (1-0, 1-0 Pac-10) squad led by quarterback Andrew Luck, scored on their first possession of the game and led 22-3 at halftime, but Washington State (0-1, 0-1 Pac-10) scored on a 5 yard Jared Karstetter touchdown reception from Kevin Lopina to cut the gap to 22-10....only to have the Cardinal run back the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to retake control of the game. For complete results, check the game recap and box scores at the official WSU Athletics web site. There is also a great recap by Lew Wright at the Washington State Examiner. Head coach Paul Wulff and the Cougar football team travel to Seattle next Saturday for their annual game at Qwest Field. This year they are squaring off against Hawaii, and the kickoff is set for 4:00pm. Come out to Qwest on Saturday and help root the Cougs on to their first victory of the season! The Washington State women's soccer team improved to 17-0-1 lifetime against their neighbors to the north, the Gonzaga Bulldogs, with a 3-0 shutout in Spokane today. Senior Kiersten Dallstream scored twice, raising her career total to 22, good for fourth place all-time, and freshman Brandi Vega tallied her second goal of the season to lead the Cougars to their third victory of this young season. For full details of the match, click on the link to go to the story on the official WSU Athletics web site, or go HERE to read all about the match on CougZone (another great source for everything associated with Washington State athletics!). Next up for the Cougars is #5 Florida State, on the road in Tallahasee, Florida....a very tough match-up anywhere, but tougher still when you have to travel all the way across the country.
