Washington State junior, Jeshua Anderson, had the lead coming in to the last few hurdles but couldn't hold off long-time arch-rival, Johnny Dutch from South Carolina, and was denied in his bid to win his third straight NCAA 400 meter hurdles title. Dutch won the race with a time of 48.75 seconds, while Anderson finished second in 49.21 seconds. However, when you sit back and look at the results, in a race like the 400 meter hurdles, where one miss-step can send you crashing, in his three years at WSU, Jeshua Anderson has three Pac-10 Conference titles, two NCAA titles, and one second place NCAA finish...a very impressive record indeed! The Olympic Games seem to be in his future! Cougar head coach, Donnie Marbut, and the rest of his Washington State baseball squad battled to the very last out, but their season came to an end tonight with a 7-2 loss to Arkansas in the NCAA Fayetteville Regional final. With the victory, the Razorbacks (43-19) move on to the Tempe Super Regional to face Arizona State for a chance to play in the College World Series in the final CWS to be played at storied Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska. WSU (37-22) played outstanding baseball this season, especially down the stretch, when they finished the regular season 12-3 to secure their second straight NCAA post-season tournament berth. In tonight's final, the Razorbacks got off to a fast start on their home field (even though they were the visiting team) by scoring three runs in the top of the first against Cougar starter, Paris Shewey. WSU senior, Matt Fanelli, drilled his seventh home run of the season in the second inning to cut the Arkansas lead to 3-1, but the Razorbacks added three more in the third to extend their lead to 6-1 and never looked back. Another Washington State senior Michael Weber, led the Cougs at the plate, going 2-4 with the other RBI. For more complete information on the game, head to the WSU Athletics web site recap HERE. With a strong contingent of players returning for next season, the Cougs will be looking to return to the NCAA tournament for a third straight year and make their way all the way to the College World Series in Omaha! Washington State (37-21) pulled out all of the stops and won their second elimination game of the day, this time defeating #15 Arkansas, 10-7. With the win the Cougs forced a final "winner-take-all" game tomorrow with the Razorbacks (42-19), with Fayetteville Regional title on the line, as well as a trip to the Super Regional in Tempe, Arizona, against top-ranked Arizona State. James Wise (4-1) picked up the win for the Cougars, starting his second game of the day and going three innings, allowing one run on two hits, striking out three and walking two batters. Connor Lambert relieved Wise and then for the first time in his career, Washington State ace, Chad Arnold, came on in relief of Lambert to pitch the last four innings to pick up his first-ever save. Derek Jones led WSU at the plate, going 4-5, with two RBI's and scoring two runs. Senior Matt Fanelli also had a great night on the offensive side, going 2-4 with three RBI's. Tomorrow's final game for all of the regional marbles will start at 5:05pm (Pacific). For more information on today's second big win by Washington State, check out the official WSU Athletics game article, box score, etc., HERE. The Cougars (36-21) spotted Kansas State (37-22) a 6-1 lead but came roaring back to extend their season and end the Wildcats season with a 9-6 victory. Washington State (2-1 in the NCAA Regional), still facing elimination, will now take on Arkansas (2-0 in the NCAA Regional) later tonight. If the Cougars win, they force a winner-take-all final for the Super Regional berth against the Razorbacks on Monday. If Arkansas wins tonight, they advance to the Super Regional in Tempe, Arizona, and WSU would head for home. Starter James Wise lasted only two and two-thirds innings, but freshman left-hander, Richie Ochoa (2-2) came on in relief and closed the door on Kansas State. Ochoa pitched four and two-thirds shutout innings, allowing only two hits, while striking out four and walking none. His performance earned praise from Cougar skipper Donnie Marbut and allowed Washington State to stage yet another comeback this season. Seth Harvey threw the last inning and one-third to earn his third save of the year. Offensively, the Cougs were paced by Garry Kuykendall, with a 3-5 performance, but it was Derek Jones who finished the comeback with a three-run bomb, his twelfth of the season, to cap a six-run sixth inning. Jones was 2-5 in the game, with five RBI's and one run scored. Matt Fanelli also homered for Washington State, belting his sixth dinger of the season. The Cougs don't have long to savor the victory, as they take on Arkansas at 5:05pm (Pacific) later tonight. For the box score and a detailed article, head to the official WSU Athletics recap HERE. Washington State (35-21) fell behind early but had battled back to trail only 5-4 heading in to the ninth inning, but Arkansas (42-18) tallied an insurance run and moved on in the winners bracket, 6-4. The Cougars will now play Kansas State, who beat Grambling, 9-8, to knock them out of the tournament, on Sunday in an elimination game. The Razorbacks got to Cougar starter, Adam Conley (5-4), for five runs in his 6 1/3 innings of work, but a trio of Cougs, Connor Lambert, Paris Shewey and Seth Harvey, only allowed one more run the rest of the way to keep WSU within striking distance. On the offensive side, Cody Bartlett continued his hot hitting streak, going 2-4 with his seventh home run of the season (and second of the NCAA tournament), while Michael Weber blasted his eighth home run of the season. Head to the WSU Athletics web site for all the details by clicking HERE. The Cougars will hopefully have a long day tomorrow (Sunday), as they take on Kansas State in an elimination game at 12:05pm (Pacific), with the winner taking on Arkansas at 5:05pm (Pacific). Redshirt junior, Cody Bartlett, hit a two-run home run, his sixth of the season, in the top of the eighth inning to break a 6-6 tie and lead Washington State to an NCAA tournament opening victory over Kansas State, 8-6. Bartlett had an outstanding game at the plate, going 3-5, with two RBI's and three runs scored, to lead the offensive attack that saw the Cougars collect twelve hits off of Wildcat pitching. Derek Jones and Matt Fanelli both followed up Bartlett's effort with two hits apiece, with Fanelli picking up two RBI's and Jones picking up one. With the victory, Washington State's overall record moved to 35-20, while Kansas State's record fell to 36-21. Cougar starter, Chad Arnold, pitched well and carried a 3-1 lead in to the sixth inning, but allowed KSU to take the lead 4-3 in the sixth and was replaced by Paris Shewey. Shewey allowed Kansas State to extend their lead to 6-3, but Washington State came back to tie the game at six in the seventh. Shewey was replaced by Connor Lambert (5-1) with two outs in the top of the eighth with the winning run in scoring position, but Lambert took care of business and got credit for the win when the Cougs scored their two runs on Bartlett's bomb in the bottom of the eighth. Adam Conley pitched the ninth inning for the save, his twelth of the season. Kansas State takes on Grambling (who got blown out, 19-7, by Arkansas in their first game) in a loser-out game on Saturday as well. The loser of the WSU - Arkansas game will then take on the winner of the Kansas State - Grambling game in another loser-out contest in the double-elimination Fayetteville Regional, while the winner of the Cougar-Razorback game gets to sit and watch, and more importantly...REST...while they wait to see who survives the losers bracket for a chance to play to move on to the Super Regional. Stay tuned to the WSU Sports Photo Blog for results of all of the tournament action, as the Cougars attempt to get back to Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska, for the College World Series for only the fifth time in school history, and the first time since 1976. .
