Washington State's Ken Bone learned first hand how the Pac-10 conference officials have earned their poor reputation over the years in his very first Pac-10 game as head coach, as the Cougars lost to the Oregon Ducks in double overtime, 91-89. After seemingly winning the game on a DeAngelo Casto finger roll at the end of the first overtime, Coach Bone watched in utter disgust as the Pac-10 officiating crew (Mike Littlewood, Tony Padilla and Bruce Hicks) huddled up and called a bench celebration technical (for players being on the court) with 3 tenths of a second left in the game. The Cougars were up by two at the time, but Tajuan Porter made both "gifted" technical foul shots to send the game to a second overtime. The Ducks won the game in the second overtime on a basket with 5 tenths of a second left, 91-89. Duck players spilled out on to the floor after their "winning" basket with time still left on the clock, but one of the officials had called a foul on the play (even though on replays it was obvious that Oregon's Malcolm Armstead had used his forearm to shove Klay Thompson out of the way to clear enough space to put up his shot), thus creating a dead ball situation. COMMENTARY: Watching college basketball for the last thirty years or so (hundreds of games, both live and on television, including end-of-game replays on ESPN), I have seen many winning shots go up in the last few seconds of a game and, while I've seen plenty of benches erupt and spill out on to the court in the excitement of the game winning situation, I have NEVER seen a bench technical called for celebrating players at the apparent end of a game. In other conferences, officials let the players decide the games, they don't try to influence the outcome of the games themselves. Here is where it gets even more ridiculous: Furthermore, per the NCAA rulebook, for a bench technical to be called for a delay of the game, and the rule is very specific, the player(s) or fans that have come out on to the court have to have interfered with the opposing team's ability to inbound the ball or the delay is to be ignored, and play is to resume at the point of the delay WITHOUT a technical foul being assessed. On the play at the end of the first overtime, after Casto's basket, the Oregon team obviously thought they had lost the game, as they made ZERO attempt to inbound the basketball, and so, by rule, no technical should have been called. You can watch the ESPN replay yourself on YouTube and see that there is no Oregon player attempting to get back to the baseline to inbound the ball...you will also see an Oregon player catch the ball, after it goes through the basket on Casto's shot, and make no attempt to go back to the baseline to inbound it...he actually holds on to it and starts to walk towards the free throw line, obviously thinking the game was over and they had lost, just as the Cougar team thought the game was over and they had won: It was an unfortunate end to an otherwise exciting Pac-10 conference game for Washington State. They had fought back from a 15 point deficit, only to lose after apparently winning the game on the court. There are plenty of links and plenty of opinion on the skill levels of the Pac-10 officiating crew working the game (including their post-game reasoning for calling the technical, all of which hinges on Oregon not being able to inbound the ball...something that they did not even attempt to do).
