BASEBALL: COUGARS SPLIT FOUR-GAME SERIES WITH CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD

Cal State Bakersfield came to Pullman for a four-game series with Washington State and in the end it was a draw, as both teams won two games. The Cougars won the first and third games, while Cal State Bakersfield won the second game and the finale.

With a 16 hit attack, led by Matt Argyropoulos's three-for-three night at the plate, with three RBI's and three runs scored, and the two-hit pitching performance of Chad Arnold, Washington State (13-5) romped in the opener, 14-3.

In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Cal State Bakersfield (10-10) built a 9-1 lead and held on for a 9-5 victory over Washington State (13-6). Cougar starting pitcher, Spencer Jackson (3-1), suffered his first loss of the seaon. In the second game of the day, and third game of the series, WSU (14-6) came back from a 6-0 first half inning deficit to beat the Roadrunners, 13-12, in a slugfest. Seth Harvey (1-1) picked up the win in relief, despite giving up five hits and five runs, and Adam Conley threw the final two scoreless innings to pick up his fifth save of the season. Derek Jones led the Cougs at the plate, going three -for-four, with two runs and two RBI's.

In the series finale, head coach Donnie Marbut and the Cougars hoped to win the series, but they ran in to an outstanding pitching performance from the Roadrunners Mike McCarthy, who pitched a complete game shutout, as Cal State Bakersfield (11-11) won the contest over Washington State (14-7), 3-0. Travis Cook (0-1) started for Washington State and pitched well, only allowing two runs, but with Cougs offense being completely shut down, he suffered his first loss of the season.

Washington State heads up the road to Spokane on Tuesday to take on Gonzaga.

BASEBALL: COUGARS FALL IN NINTH IN OPENER, THEN GET SNOWED OUT OF KANSAS

The Washington State baseball team lost the opening game of their three-game series on the road against Wichita State, only to then sit at their hotel and watch the snow fall for two straight days, cancelling the remaining two games. Since the games are non-conference games, they will not be made up.

In what amounted to the only game of the their three-game series, Washington State (11-5) tied the game with a three-run rally in the top of the ninth inning, only to watch as Wichita State (11-5) came back with a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory, 5-3. Seth Harvey (0-1) took the loss after giving up the two-run homer in the ninth, and the two runs were the first he has given up this season in nine appearances.

The Cougars finally get to head back to the friendly confines of Bailey-Brayton Field, returning to action on Tuesday against the Gonzaga Bulldogs. The Cougs are currently 5-1 at home and 6-4 on the road.

BASEBALL: WASHINGTON STATE SPLITS ROAD SERIES WITH DALLAS BAPTIST

Head coach Donnie Marbut and his Washington State baseball team stayed on the road to take on a solid Dallas Baptist squad in a two-game series in Dallas. Dallas Baptist won the opener, 14-5, and Washington State came back to take the final game of the brief series, 5-2.

In the opener, Dallas Baptist (10-6) torched the Washington State (10-4) pitching staff for 17 hits and 14 runs. Cougar starting pitcher, freshman Richie Ochoa (1-1), took the loss, while the offense was paced by sophomore slugger, Derek Jones, who hit his fourth home run of the season in the first inning, and freshman Brady Steiger, who had two hits in the game.

In the get-away game, Washington State (11-4) scored four times in the top of the ninth inning, with three runs crossing on a Derek Jones double, to rally the Cougs past Dallas Baptist (10-7), 5-2. Sophomore Adam Conley (1-0) pitched two innings of hitless relief, striking out three of the six batters he faced to get the victory, while junior Cody Bartlett led the hit parade with three hits in the game.

BASEBALL: COUGS DROP TWO OF THREE GAMES AT #29 TEXAS A&M

Washington State and Texas A&M put on quite a show in their three game series and the Aggies came out on top in two out of the three games. Texas A&M won the first game, 4-3, Washington State won the second game, 7-5, and the Aggies took the rubber game, 6-5.

In the opener, the Cougs (9-2) held a 2-1 lead going in to the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Aggies (12-2) touched Cougar ace Chad Arnold (2-1) for three runs in the inning to secure the victory. Freshman Brett Jacobs and senior Matt Fanelli both had three hits in the game on the offensive side.

In the middle game, Washington State (10-2) scored five times in the top of the second inning and held on to snap Texas A&M's (12-3) nine game winning streak, 7-5. Spencer Jackson (3-0) got the win with five solid innings and Shea Vucinich had three hits and Cody Bartlett hit a three-run homer to pace the offense.

In final game of the series, it was a nip-and-tuck game as the teams traded leads, with Texas A&M (13-3) coming out on top in the end, 6-5. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: LADY COUGS SEASON ENDS WITH LOSS IN PAC-10 TOURNEY TO ARIZONA, 62-60

The Washington State Lady Cougs fought back from 14 point second half deficit, and had a chance to win it at the end with a three point attempt from April Cook, but it was not to be as the shot missed and WSU's season came to an end in the first round of the Pac-10 tournament with a hard-fought loss to the Arizona Wildcats, 62-60. With the loss, the Lady Cougs finish the season 8-22 overall.

April Cook (sophomore) led Washington State on the offensive side of the ball, with 18 points, while Danielle LeNoir (sophomore - pictured above), Jazmine Perkins (sophomore) and Kiki Moore (freshman), all chipped in nine points each.

For more information on the Cougars final game of the season, check out the WSU Athletics web site. Even though this season did not play out as she had hoped, head coach June Daugherty has got to be excited about the future of the women's basketball program at Washington State as she has all but one player returning next season.

BASKETBALL: HOOP SEASON ENDS WITH OT LOSS IN PAC-10 TOURNEY TO OREGON, 82-80

Head coach Ken Bone and his Washington State basketball team saw their season come to an agonizing end at the free throw line in an overtime loss to the Oregon Ducks in the first round of the Pac-10 conference tournament at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, 82-80. For the game, the Cougars shot an abysmal 12-25 from the free throw line, and they missed the front end of two one-and-one opportunities at the end of regulation that would have iced the game for them.

Washington State was led by Klay Thompson (sophomore), with 20 points, Marcus Capers (sophomore), with 16 points, Brock Motum (freshman), with a career-high 14 points in only 16 minutes of work, DeAngelo Casto (sophomore), with 13 points and nine rebounds, Nikola Koprivica (senior), with 10 points, and Reggie Moore (freshman), with 7 points and 8 assists.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: THREE COUGARS GRAB ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS

It wasn't the season that head coach June Daugherty and her Lady Cougs were hoping for, but with only one senior, and a typical starting cast that consisted of two freshmen and two sophomores, the future looks very bright for the WSU women's basketball program.

Today, the Pac-10 commissioner, Larry Scott, announced that two Cougars garnered All Pac-10 honors, as freshman Kiki Moore was named to the first team All-Freshman team and honorable mention on the All-Defensive team, and April Cook was named honorable mention All-Pac-10. For more information on conference honors handed out by the Pac-10, check out the official WSU web site release HERE.

Additionally, on Tuesday, writers that cover women's basketball for the Pac-10 conference voted on their choices for all-conference teams, and two Cougars were honored. Kiki Moore was named to the All-Freshmen team and to the All-Defensive team, while fellow freshman, Carly Noyes, was named to the All-Defensive team. BASKETBALL: THREE WSU COUGARS NAMED ALL PAC-10

Three Washington State basketball players were named to All Pac-10 teams as announced today by commissioner Larry Scott from the Pac-10 office in Walnut Creek, California. Sophomore Klay Thompson was named first team All Pac-10 Team, sophomore DeAngelo Casto was named first team All Pac-10 Defensive Team and honorable mention All Pac-10 Team, and freshman Reggie Moore was named first team All Pac-10 Freshman Team.

While all of the teams, except of course the All-Freshman Team, were dominated by seniors, the fact that of the three Cougs named all conference, two were sophomores and one was a freshman, bodes well for head coach Ken Bone and the WSU basketball program in the coming years. BASEBALL: BATS GO SILENT AS WASHINGTON STATE SUFFERS FIRST LOSS OF THE YEAR, COUGS FALL TO UTAH, 4-1

It took ten games to do it, but Washington State actually lost a baseball game, falling to Utah in the last game of their four game series, 4-1. With the loss, the Cougs drop to 9-1 on the season, but, despite the loss, WSU also cracked the Top 30 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll, coming in at #28.

Against Utah, Cougar starter Rusty Shellhorm (0-1) took the loss after giving up 3 runs in 3 1/3 innings of work, while Utah's starter, Rick Anton, kept WSU batters at bay, striking out 9 in 7 innings. The official WSU Athletics web site has additional details on the final contest between the Cougs and the Utes, a series that was won by WSU, three games to one.

Washington State now embarks on a tough 8 game road trip, with 3 games at Texas A&M, 2 games at Dallas Baptist and 3 more games at Wichita State.

BASKETBALL: COUGS PLAY BETTER FIRST HALF, SAVE SHOOTING DROUGHT FOR SECOND HALF IN LOSS TO OREGON, 74-66

Ken Bone and his Washington State basketball team played better in the first half than they have the last few games, but instead of playing an outstanding second half like they have been as of late, they simply moved their shooting slump to the second half today in losing their final regular season game to Oregon at McArthur Court (Mac Court), 74-66. With yet another loss, the Cougs fall to 16-14 overall, and 6-12 in Pac-10 conference play, with the latter being good enough for last place.

Klay Thompson led the Cougs in scoring with 22 points, while DeAngelo Casto had another double-double, with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and Nikola Koprivica chipped in 10 points. For additional details, head to the WSU Athletics web site for plenty of inside scoop.

WSU will play Oregon one more time this season, this Wednesday, in the opening game of the Pac-10 tournament at 8pm in Los Angeles. The winner between the Ducks and the Cougs will take on Pac-10 regular season champion, California, on Thursday afternoon.

BASKETBALL: HORRENDOUS SHOOTING IN FIRST HALF DOOMS WASHINGTON STATE ONCE AGAIN, HUGE COMEBACK FALLS JUST SHORT IN LOSS TO OREGON STATE, 59-55

In what is becoming an alarming trend, the head coach Ken Bone and his Washington State basketball team had yet another horrendous shooting night in the first half of their game against Oregon State, and despite another huge comeback attempt, the Cougs fell to the Beavers, 59-55.

With the loss, WSU falls to 16-13 overall and 6-11 in Pac-10 conference play. Washington State is now in danger of having to play in the Wednesday play-in game at the Pac-10 tournament, the winner of which gets the unenviable task of taking on regular season champion California.

Against Oregon State, the Cougs were led by sophomore Klay Thompson (7-11 from the field, including 4-6 from beyond the three point line), who snapped out of his recent slump with 18 points, senior Nikola Koprivica, with 12 points, freshman Reggie Moore (0-8 from the field, but 10-11 from the line), with 10 points, and sophomore DeAngelo Casto, with 8 points.
