BASEBALL: COUGARS SELECTED FOR NCAA TOURNAMENT AS #2 SEED IN FAYETTEVILLE REGIONAL

When the NCAA selection show started on ESPN, it didn't take Washington State (34-20) long to find out that they had received an at-large bid to the 64-team tournament for the second straight year. Head coach Donnie Marbut and his squad were slotted as a #2 seed in the Fayetteville, Arkansas, Regional tournament, and will play the #3 seed, Kansas State (36-20) from the Big 12 Conference, on Friday, June 4th at 5:05pm Pacific (7:05pm Central). Arkansas (40-17), from the SEC, is the host and received the #1 seed, while Grambling (22-30) rounds out the regional as the #4 seed.

Overall, the Pac-10 Conference had eight teams selected to the tournament, led by Arizona State and UCLA, both of which were selected as host regional sites and received #1 seeds, and Washington State, California and Stanford as #2 seeds. The only teams to not make this years NCAA tournament were the Washington Huskies and USC Trojans, who finished 9th and 10th in the conference.

For more information on the Cougars second straight selection to post-season play, check out the following article at the official WSU Athletics web site (Cougar Baseball Back on the Road to Omaha), and the YouTube interview below with Donnie Marbut, courtesy of WSU Athletics.

BASEBALL: COUGARS DROP FINAL PAC-10 SERIES TO #8 UCLA IN LOS ANGELES, TWO GAMES TO ONE

Washington State ran in to some outstanding starting pitching as they finished the regular season by dropping their series with UCLA in Los Angeles, two games to one. The Cougars finished the Pac-10 play in sole possession of third place with a 15-12 record, and finished 34-20 overall. Meanwhile, the Bruins finished the season in second place in the Pac-10, with an 18-9 record, and finished 43-13 overall. UCLA won the first game of the series, 6-1, the Cougars came back to tie the series by winning game two, 6-4, but the Bruins won the deciding game in convincing fashion, shutting down the WSU offense in an 11-1 rout.

In game one, UCLA's Gerrit Cole (9-2), and three other relievers, combined to strike out 15 Cougars to lead the Bruins to the 6-1 win. Chad Arnold (5-3) pitched well, but took the loss, while Matt Fanelli stroked two of the Cougs four hits.

Brett Jacobs led the Cougars at the plate, going 2-4, with two RBI's, and Michael Weber, who hit his seventh home run.

Game three was all UCLA, as the Bruins jumped on Adam Conley (5-3), starting the game after closing the Cougars win the day before, early and five other relievers couldn't ebb the tide, as UCLA won the season finale going away, 11-1. Tommy Richards led Washington State on the offensive side, collecting two of their five hits.

Washington State picked up a pair of non-conference victories on Tuesday and Wednesday, to run their overall record to 33-18, shutting out Gonzaga in Spokane, 2-0, and defeating Portland at Bailey-Brayton Field, 3-2.

Against Gonzaga, Paris Shewey (7-2) started his first game of the year and pitched seven shutout innings, allowing three hits, while striking out six, to pick up the victory. Shea Vucinich led the Cougs at the plate, going 1-4 with a triple, while knocking in one run and scoring a run. Freshman Travis Cook (1-3) picked up his first collegiate win against Portland (31-18) on Wednesday, throwing 6.2 innings of four-hit baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, leading Washington State (33-18) past the Pilots, 3-2. Cook had great command all day, allowing two runs, while walking none and striking out three. Matt Fanelli picked up two RBI's at the plate, despite not getting a hit. The win marked the seventh straight victory for the Cougars, and, according to head coach Donnie Marbut, they are playing their best baseball of the season heading in to the last weekend of Pac-10 play and, hopefully, a good seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament. For all the happy totals of the game, head to the WSU Athletics web site.

Washington State, ranked 20th in the country heading in to this week, next travels to Los Angeles to complete the 2010 Pac-10 slate, taking on 8th ranked UCLA on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

BASEBALL: COUGS CRUSH TROJANS IN THREE STRAIGHT TO ALL BUT ASSURE AN NCAA TOURNAMENT BERTH

Washington State all but assured their spot in the NCAA tournament by blasting the USC Trojans in three straight games at Bailey-Brayton Field, 20-7, 18-4 and 8-2. With the sweep, the Cougars improved their Pac-10 record to 14-10 and their overall record to 31-18, while taking over sole possession of third place in the conference.

In game one, the Cougars got great starting pitching from Chad Arnold (5-2) to back their 23-hit attack as Washington State demolished USC, 20-7. Several Cougs had productive nights at the plate, including Patrick Claussen (4-6, with three RBI's and two runs scored), Derek Jones (3-4, three RBI's and two runs scored), Jay Ponciano (3-4, two RBI's and one run scored), Matt Fanelli (3-3, one RBI and four runs scored) and Matt Argyropoulos (2-4, three RBI's and three runs scored).

The Cougars used an eleven run fourth inning to put game two away early, just as they had done in game one, coasting to an 18-4 victory. WSU followed up their 23 hit assault on Friday with 18 more hits on Saturday. James Wise (3-1) pitched six strong innings, allowing only three runs, to get the win on the mound, while Derek Jones (3-4, two home runs, seven RBI's) and Michael Weber (3-5, five RBI's) led the "hit parade" at the plate.

Game three was a different story, as it was a nail-biter until Washington State put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend a tight 3-2 lead to a comfortable 8-2 victory and a sweep of the visiting Trojans. Adam Conley (5-2) started for the Cougs and pitched eight strong innings for the win, while Garry Kuykendall (1) and Derek Jones (11) hit bombs, while Matt Fanelli went three for four, to lead a twelve hit attack at the plate. The Cougars teed off on USC pitching all weekend, belting out 53 hits in the three game Pac-10 series.

Matt Fanelli
Matt Fanelli - Washington State Baseball
PHOTO: Senior designated hitter, Matt Fanelli, had a great series against Stanford, going 8-13 at the plate, with one home run, three RBI's and three runs scored as Washington State came back from a stunning defeat in game one to win games two and three to take the Pac-10 conference series from the Cardinal in Palo Alto.

BASEBALL: WASHINGTON STATE COMES BACK TO WIN SERIES AGAINST #25 STANFORD AFTER TOUGH GAME ONE LOSS

After watching Stanford come back from a 7-3 deficit by scoring five runs in the eighth inning to win game one, 8-7, Washington State got back up off of the mat to win game two, 4-2, behind steller starting pitching from James Wise (2-1), and then staged a late-game comeback of their own, coming back from a 3-2 deficit in the top of the ninth inning, scoring seven runs to win the game and the series with a 9-3 victory in the decisive third game. With the win, the Cougars moved above .500 in Pac-10 conference play at 11-10, and moved to 28-18 overall. Meanwhile, Stanford, who had come in to the game winners of five of their last six games and ranked 25th in the country, fell in to a tie with the Cougs in conference play at 11-10, and fell to 27-20 overall.

Washington State starter, junior Chad Arnold, pitched a great game in game one, and was pulled after walking the first batter he faced in the eighth inning after throwing 104 pitches and building a 7-3 lead. However, the Cougar bullpen couldn't hold the lead to get the win for Arnold and the Cardinal came back for the game one 8-7 victory by scoring five runs in the bottom of the eighth. Paris Shewey (6-2), who has been outstanding as of late, had a rough outing and took the loss. Senior Matt Fanelli had an outstanding night at the plate, going 3-4, knocking in a run and scoring a run, while fellow senior, Michael Weber, hit his fourth home run of the season.

Head coach Donnie Marbut decided to start junior James Wise in game two and looked like a genius in doing so. The Cougars were in dire need of a conference victory, and Wise (2-1) responded with eight shutout innings in helping Washington State level the series at one game apiece with a 4-2 victory. Catcher, Jay Ponciano, led the "hit parade" at the plate, going 3-4 with his first home run of the season.

Game three had a great late-game comeback, just as game one did, only this time it was the Cougars staging the comeback. Washington State entered the top of ninth trailing the Cardinal 3-2, but behind a two-run triple from Shea Vucinich and a grand slam from Michael Weber (his second home run of the game), the Cougs scored seven runs to win the decisive third game going away, 9-3. Adam Conley pitched seven strong innings, only allowing two earned runs, but left the game trailing 3-2, so Connor Lambert (4-1), who pitched the last two innings and allowed no baserunners, was the recipient of the seven run outburst and picked up his fourth win of the season.

Washington State stays on the road with a non-conference game against Gonzaga in Spokane this Tuesday. This game will mark their fifith straight road game, and eighth road game in their last eleven, during this tough stretch of their schedule.

BASEBALL: WASHINGTON STATE SWEEPS AWAY #18 CAL

If Washington State has any more Pac-10 series like this one, head coach Donnie Marbut might want to buy stock in Pepto Bismal. The Cougars climbed back in to the Pac-10 conference race, and the race for NCAA tournament berths, with a gut-check sweep of the 18th ranked Cal Bears at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman. The Cougs won all three games in the series, winning 13-10, 11-9 and 9-4.

To get the all-important sweep, the Cougars had to come back from huge deficits in both game one and game two, and then had to hold on to a big lead of their own in game three. With the trifecta, Washington State got back to .500 in Pac-10 play at 9-9, and upped their overall record to 25-17. Meanwhile, Cal, who came in to the series on a four game winning streak, exited at 11-10 in Pac-10 play and 27-18 overall.

In game one WSU came back from three separate deficits, including a 5-0 fourth inning deficit, to win, 13-10. Paris Shewey (6-1) got the win in relief of starter Chad Arnold. Matt Fanelli picked up three RBI's at the plate, while both Garry Kuykendall and Jay Ponciano picked up two hits apiece in the Cougars 11 hit attack.

The Cougars came back from a sixth inning 6-1 deficit in game two with a nine run outburst in their half of the sixth inning and went on to win, 11-9. Cody Bartlett and Shea Vucinich were the hitting stars, picking up three hits apiece, while Michael Weber connected for his second home run of the season, scored two runs and had three RBI's. Seth Harvey picked up the win in relief of David Stilley and James Wise, while Connor Lambert picked up his first save by shutting down the Bears in the ninth inning.

In the final game, Adam Conley made his first start of the season and got the win (4-2), going 6 2/3 innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits, striking out three and walking only one. On the offensive side, Patrick Claussen hit his first home run of the season, while picking up three RBI's in the Cougars 9-4 victory to complete the sweep.

Washington State immediately heads to Portland for a non-conference game with the Pilots tomorrow (Tuesday) and then heads to Palo Alto for conference games with yet another ranked team, #25 Stanford on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

TRACK & FIELD: WASHINGTON STATE MEN AND WOMEN DEMOLISH HUSKIES

Head coach Rick Sloan and the Washington State men's and women's track teams hosted the University of Washington in a dual track meet at Mooberry Track and both program's came away with decisive victories over the Huskies. The Cougar men defeated the Huskies 108-55, while the Cougar women avenged last season's 2/3 of a point loss to the UW by defeating them 114-39.

Standout individual performances were turned in on the men's side by junior Jeshua Anderson, who won both the 110 meter and 400 meter hurdles races handily, and freshman Stephan Scott-Ellis, who won the long jump and the triple-jump. And on the women's side, double winners were sophomore Kjirsten Jensen, who won the hammer throw and shot put, and by junior Candace Missouri, who won the long jump and the triple jump.

Next up for track and field are the Pac-10 conference championships in Berkeley, California, which will be contested for the decathletes and heptathletes on May 8th and 9th, and for the rest of the squad on May 15th and 16th.

David Stilley
David Stilley - Washington State Baseball
PHOTO: Washington State redshirt sophomore starter, David Stilley, pitched well in game two of the Duck series, but the Cougars could only manage one hit against Oregon and lost the Pac-10 conference contest, 6-0.

BASEBALL: COUGS DROP LAST TWO GAMES OF DUCK SERIES TO 17th RANKED OREGON

After winning game one of the Pac-10 conference series with 17th ranked Oregon down in Eugene, the Washington State baseball team ran in to some steller Duck pitching in games two and three and lost both contests, 6-0 and 6-1. With the two losses to open the month of May, the Cougs drop to 6-9 in Pac-10 play and 22-17 overall, while Oregon upped it's conference mark to 10-8 and 30-14 overall.

In the second game of the series (Saturday's contest), the Cougars got good starting pitching from David Stilley, but the offense could only manage one hit and the Ducks shut out Washington State, 6-0.

The rubber game of the series on Sunday was not much different than Saturday's game as Oregon again used great pitching to throttle the Cougars, 6-1. Washington State got a decent start from James Wise, but the bats were pretty much silent once again as Oregon took the series from WSU, two games to one.

Washington State now has time to regroup before starting their next Pac-10 series with the 18th ranked Cal Bears. Most all conference series are contested from Friday through Sunday, but this series at Bailey-Brayton Field does not start until Saturday and will continue through Monday. With conference play over half done, WSU is now faced with must win situations if they want to secure their second straight NCAA tournament invitiation. Most prognosticators are predictiing that teams from the Pac-10 will need at least a 14-13 conference mark to be considered for post-season play. If that is the case, the Cougars must finish 8-4 in their last twelve conference contests to have a shot.
