Having won four of the last five Apple Cup's, Washington State was hoping to find a miracle and make it five out of six in the senior's final game as Washington State Cougars, but it was not to be as the Cougs saw too much Jake Locker, and WSU fell to arch-rival Washington at Husky Stadium in Seattle, 30-0. In a season with few upper classmen and a significant amount of injuries, the Cougs finished the 2009 season 1-11, and 0-9 in the Pac-10 conference. As it had been during the entire season, the injury bug continued tonight as the Cougs, who were already without starting quarterback Jeff Tuel, lost second string (and tonight's starter) Kevin Lopina in the first quarter to a throwing shoulder injury, then lost third stringer, Marshall Lobbestael, to an apparent concussion in the second quarter. Lopina came back in, but was carried off the field again near the end of the second quarter with an apparent leg injury. The Cougars had to finish the second quarter with Dan Wagner, the back-up punter, taking snaps and handing off. Lobbestael was examined at halftime and given the go-ahead to play, and he finished out the rest of the second half. It was a fitting end to a frustrating season. To get all the stats, quotes and recaps of this year's rivalry game, go to the WSU Athletics web site. With the loss, Cougar head coach, Paul Wulff, falls to 1-1 overall in the Apple Cup, while new Husky head man, Steve Sarkisian, is undefeated at 1-0. After the team returns to Pullman, head Cougar, Paul Wulff, and the rest of the coaching staff will all head out on the road to finish up this year's recruiting class, as well as getting the significant amount of returning players in to the weight room to add strength and speed for next season. Next August can't come too soon! GO COUGS! - WSU Sports Photo Blog staff |
