It was all "trick" and no "treat" as the Washington State football team traveled to San Antonio, Texas, on Halloween to take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish today and took one on the chin, 40-14. Although the first quarter went better than they have as late, the second quarter was all Irish, including a "hail mary" touchdown pass from Jimmy Clausen to Golden Tate from 50 yards out on the last play of the half to take a 30-7 lead in to intermission. Cougar freshman quarterback, Jeff Tuel, had two more touchdown passes, but still had little to no time to throw for a majority of the game. Senior running back, Dwight Tardy, had his best game in a while, but still only managed 73 total yards (on only 8 carries) behind the banged up WSU offensive line. Click on the links to get recaps, stats, post-game quotes and all the details at the official WSU Athletics web site. Next up for the Cougars is another venture on the road, this time to Tuscon, Arizona, to take on the Wildcats this coming Saturday. GO COUGS! - WSU Sports Photo Blog staff |

The Cougars are now 16-6 overall and 5-6 in Pac-10 conference play. Check out the official WSU Athletics web site and CougZone for detailed articles on the contest. Freshman Brandi Vega scored the lone goal of the game in the 40th minute of the first half and Washington State's tough defense made it stand up in the Cougars 1-0 shutout victory over the 25th ranked Oregon State Beavers in Corvallis, Oregon, tonight. The Cougs up their Pac-10 record to 4-1-1, and their overall record to 12-4-1 with the victory. Check out the WSU Athletics web site and CougZone for a recap of tonights action and the box score. With the loss, the Cougs fall to 16-5 overall, and 5-5 in the extremely tough Pac-10 conference. Wazzu travels to #18 Arizona next, for a match on Halloween night, October 31st. Just as their last match did, Washington State's Pac-10 conference match with the Cal Bears was tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation and went in to overtime. However, today the result was much better for the 20th ranked Cougars, as five minutes in to the overtime period Carly Dobratz was taken down in the box and WSU was awarded a penalty kick. Senior Kiersten Dallstream (pictured above) connected on the kick to give the victory to the Cougs, 2-1, over the 23rd ranked Bears. With the victory, Washington State improves to 11-4-1 and to 3-1-1 in conference. Visit the WSU Athletics web site and CougZone for all the match information you could ever want! The Pac-10 conference schedule continues for the Cougs, as next up is a road trip to the state of Oregon to take on the Oregon State Beavers on Friday and the Oregon Ducks on Sunday. Despite allowing Washington State true freshman quarterback, Jeff Tuel, to pass for a season and career high 354 yards and two touchdowns (completing 28 of 42 passes from behind a depleted offensive line), the California Golden Bears had little trouble dispatching the Cougars, 49-17, in Berkeley, California, today. With the loss, head coach Paul Wulff and his Cougs fall to 1-6 on the season, and 0-5 in the Pac-10 conference, while the Bears moved to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-10. Next Saturday, Washington State takes on the #25 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in San Antonio, Texas. The Washington State soccer team was just over three minutes away from pulling off the biggest upset in the program's history as they had a 1-0 lead of unbeaten and top ranked Stanford, only to have the Cardinal tie the match late, then win the match in overtime, 2-1. This was the Cougars first loss in Pac-10 play, as they fell to 2-1-1 in conference and 10-4-1 overall. Of their four losses, Washington State has lost at home to #1 Stanford, and on the road to #5 Florida State and #3 Portland. Their tough schedule should go a long ways in preparing WSU for the upcoming NCAA tournament, that the Cougs should now, as long as they take care of business in their remaining schedule, have no problem getting an invitation to. Redshirt junior, Mallory Fox, saved the Washington State Cougar soccer team a trip to overtime in their match at the University of Arizona, by scoring the lone goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 84th minute to lead the Cougs to victory over the Wildcats. The Cougs played a majority of the game with their back-up goalkeeper, Ariana Byrd, as starter, Meghan Berlingo, was injured early in the contest and was taken out as a precaution. With the win, Washington State moves to 2-0-1 in the Pac-10 conference and to 10-3-1 overall. Go to the WSU Athletics web site and to CougZone to get all of the match details you need. After a huge win over #16 USC on Friday, the Cougs came out flat today and fell in convincing fashion in three sets, 3-0 (12-25. 24-26, 12-25), to #12 UCLA. With the loss, the Cougs fell to .500 in the Pac-10 conference at 4-4, and 15-4 overall. As is usual in the tough Pac-10, it doesn't get any easier, as WSU's next match is at home with #4 Washington, who come in to the "Apple Cup" of volleyball at 17-1 overall and 7-1 in the Pac-10 conference. Washington State's defense played outstanding at times, creating six Sun Devil turnovers, but the offense, with so many injuries on the offensive line, couldn't muster a rushing attack and couldn't give quarterback Jeff Tuel enough time to direct many sustained drives, and the Cougs ultimately fell to Arizona State, 27-14. Arizona State head coach, Dennis Erickson, leaned on his Pac-10 leading defense to overcome his offense's inability to hold on to the ball, and limited Washington State to only 181 yards of total offense (which included 12 sacks for a total of -82 yards rushing). The Cougars did score on the longest touchdown pass in school history early in the fourth quarter when quarterback Jeff Tuel hooked up with receiver Johnny Forzani on a 99 yard scoring strike. For photos, game notes, box scores and stats on the game, head to the Washington State Athletics web site. The Cougars have a bye week coming up next weekend, followed by a trip to Berkley, California, to take on the Cal Bears on Saturday, October 24th. GO COUGS! - WSU Sports Photo Blog staff |

Washington State went on the road to rival Washington and started out their Pac-10 schedule with a double overtime, 1-1, draw with the Huskies. With the draw, the Cougars record stands at 7-3-1 and 0-0-1 in the Pac-10 conference. Trailing 1-0 for a good portion of the match, the Cougars were in danger of losing to the Huskies for the first time in Coach Matt Potter's career until Elysse Van Leer stuck a rebound off of a Kiersten Dallstream shot in the back of the net to draw the Cougs even in the 84th minute. All of the details of the marathon tie are available at the WSU Athletics web site and at CougZone. Washington State went on the road to a place they have never won to take on seventh ranked Stanford tonight and won the second set, but still reamained winless against the Cardinal at Stanford. The Cougars ultimately lost the extremely competitive match, 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 22-25). With the loss, WSU falls to 14-2 on the season, and 3-2 in Pac-10 conference play. It doesn't get any easier in the Pac-10 as the Cougs look to rebound from this loss when they visit #15 California in Berkeley, California, tomorrow. The Washington State University soccer team rallied in the second half after behind the third ranked Portland Pilots, 2-0, on the road at Portland, but after pullling to within 2-1 on Kiersten Dallstream's 11th goal of the season, they couldn't get the equalizer after several close chances in the waining moments of the contest. Check out all the details of the closely fought contest against one of the elite programs in the country at both the official WSU Athletics web site and at CougZone. Washington State lost badly to Arizona State in set three to fall behind two sets to one to the Sun Devils, and seemed on the verge of losing for only the second time this season. However, the Cougs dug deep and behind the 20 kills of sophomore outside hitter, Meagan Ganzer (#9, pictured above), they rallied to win the last two sets and the match over visiting ASU. The final score of the intense Pac-10 conference match had the Cougars (14-1, 3-1 Pac-10) prevailling over Arizona State 3-2 (25-19, 24-26, 13-25, 25-17, 15-10). To see all of the happy details, go to the official WSU Athletics web site and to CougZone. More injuries, more turnovers, and another bad loss....there's not much to be happy about after the Cougs lost to the Ducks in Eugene, 52-6. It was like deja-vu of last season all over again. Washington State scored their lone 6 points after recovering a fumble at the Oregon 1 yard line....and it took three plays to punch it in from there...and even then, Oregon head coach Chip Kelly wasn't convinced that Marshall Lobbestael had gotten in to the end zone and called for a replay review. It was just a bad night in all respects for the Cougs. For those that want to see all the lopsided details, go to the WSU Athletics web site. For those that would rather forget tonight, the Cougs play Arizona State at home next Saturday. Hopefully the results at "Homecoming" will be better. GO COUGS! - WSU Sports Photo Blog staff |

WSU, now 13-1 on the season (2-1 in Pac-10 conference play), defeated the Wildcats 3-0, winning 25-21, 25-22, and 26-24. The Cougars were led by the 12 kills of Meagan Ganzer (pictured above), as well as stellar play from a host of others in a total team effort. REMINDER FOR COUG FANS TO ORDER THEIR PLACE IN HISTORY: Last month, Washington State athletic director, Jim Sterk, announced "TEAM BUILT", the official launch of Phase III of the Martin Stadium expansion project. When completed, Phase III will add 2,200 additional premium seats in suites, loge boxes and indoor and outdoor club seating areas on top of the north stands. Once 80% of the premium seats have been spoken for, the construction of Phase III will begin, hopefully finishing in time for the 2011 football season. For more information on the project and details on what you can do to help bring Phase III to fruition, go to the WSU Athletic departments' official Martin Stadium web site at martinstadium.org. Once there you will also find great renderings of what Phase III will look like (or you can go directly to the renderings by clicking here)...and a detailed article about the project on the WSU Athletics site that is available here. There are also several other great articles on the project at CougZone, the Washington State Cougars Examiner, Cougfan and at the Spokesman-Review Sports Link Blog. Fresh off of their fourth straight win, a 4-0 victory over Weber State last Friday, the #26 Washington State Cougar soccer team, led by leading scorer Kiersten Dallstream (pictured above), is preparing for a huge match with the fourth ranked team in the country, the Portland Pilots, in Portland this coming Sunday. The Cougars currently sport a 7-2 record, and would like nothing more than to go in to Portland and get a win or a tie against a highly ranked team to help further their resume for an NCAA tournament bid later this season. So far this year WSU has had mixed results against ranked opponents, winning at home against #18 Brigham Young, and losing decisively on the road against #3 Florida State. The tough early season battles will no doubt help prepare the Cougs for their upcoming Pac-10 schedule, which opens the following Friday, October 9th, at arch-rival Washington.
